README

Ziplines

Fly from your hilltop to the dock in seconds: build zipline posts, string ropes up to 150 m between them and ride at up to 72 km/h.

At a glance

  • Ropes up to 150 m long, up to 4 on each post, so one hilltop post can reach the dock, the farm and the mine.
  • Real riding. Gravity speeds you downhill at up to 72 km/h. Uphill you pull yourself along hand over hand, and an automatic brake slows you before the far post.
  • Catch a rope in mid-jump. Leap or fall into a rope and you ride on in the direction you were going.
  • Only ropes that work. Ropes that would drag a rider through ground, water, trees, rocks or buildings are refused, with the reason.
  • Simple to build: 8 Wood, 4 Leather scraps and 2 Iron per post, at a workbench.
  • No new hotkeys. The game's own keys only, so nothing clashes with your other mods.

Needs Jotunn. Everyone on the server needs Ziplines, the host included.

Features

  • Zipline post. A log post with an iron pulley and a coil of spare rope, in the Hammer's Misc tab.
  • Hang on and ride. You hang from a trolley's handle, and the mouse swivels you around. Other players see you ride.
  • Pull, slide, brake. Hold forward to pull yourself along, also uphill (it costs stamina). Stop pulling uphill and you slide back. Hold back or block to brake.
  • Get on anywhere. Ride from either end, or jump into a rope anywhere along it to catch it.
  • Hear the speed. The rope's hum rises in pitch and volume as you go faster.
  • Safe logouts. Log out, quit or let the game save mid-ride and you come back on the ground by the nearer post, not in mid-air.

How to use

The Zipline post is in the Hammer's Misc tab and needs a Workbench. It costs 8 Wood, 4 Leather scraps and 2 Iron.

  1. Build two posts, up to 150 m apart.
  2. Press Shift + E on the first post to take a rope.
  3. Look at the second post: the hover text shows the rope's length, or why it cannot be tied (too far, too steep, something in the way). Press Shift + E to tie it.
  4. Press E on either post to ride. With several ropes on a post, look along the one you want.
Key Action
Shift + E on a post Take a rope, tie it, or put it back on its first post
E on a post Ride
Hold E for a second Drop a carried rope (hammer away, not looking at a door, chest or post)
Hold W (riding) Pull yourself along, also uphill (uses stamina)
Hold S or block (riding) Brake
Space, E or attack (riding) Let go; you keep your speed and fall damage applies

Stop pulling uphill and you slide back, at worst to the post you started from. Out of stamina, hold W to hang on until you catch your breath. Overweight, you cannot pull, but W still keeps you from sliding back.

A carried rope slips back if you walk further than it is long, go through a portal, sit, steer a ship or ride, or if the first post is moved or taken down. You cannot ride with a rope in your hand, or take or tie ropes inside a ward you have no access to. Take down either post and its ropes come down; anyone riding them falls.

Configuration

Settings are in BepInEx/config/anwo.Ziplines.cfg and can be changed in game with a configuration manager.

1 - Rules

Setting Default Scope Description
Max rope length 150 Server Longest rope in metres (10-400). Over about 250 m may not show from the far end
Max slope 60 Server Steepest rope in degrees (10-80)
Max ropes per post 4 Server Ropes one post can hold (1-8)
Require clearance true Server Refuses ropes where a rider's feet, at least 2.3 m below the rope, would hit something
Rope sag 0.02 Server Sag of new ropes as a share of their length (0-0.1; 0.02 = 2 m on 100 m). Tied ropes keep theirs
Post recipe Wood:8,LeatherScraps:4,Iron:2 Server Cost of a post, as Item:Amount with prefab names (as in the game's files)

2 - Riding

Setting Default Scope Description
Max speed 20 Server Top speed in m/s (4-40; 20 m/s = 72 km/h)
Gravity 1 Server How strongly downhill ropes speed you up (0.2-3; 1 = real gravity)
Crawl speed 0 Server Minimum speed towards the far post in m/s (0-6). 0: off, you pull yourself uphill
Pull speed 4 Server Pulling speed in m/s (0-10)
Pull stamina per second 6 Server Stamina used while pulling (0-50)
Brake strength 10 Server Braking in m/s per second (1-40)
Auto-brake at the end true Server Slows you down before the far post
Arrival speed 3 Server Speed the auto-brake slows you to, in m/s (0.5-10); a higher Crawl speed wins

3 - Look and feel

Setting Default Scope Description
Ride animation hang Client Pose: hang (arms up), repell, grappling, attach_chair (chairlift) or none
Hang height 2.3 Client Distance from the rope down to your feet, in metres (1.2-3)
Rope thickness 0.05 Client Thickness of the drawn rope, in metres (0.01-0.2)
Messages Short Client Short: a few words top left. All: full help mid-screen. Off: none
Ride sound true Client Plays the rope sound while riding
Ride sound volume 0.7 Client Volume of the ride sound (0-1)

4 - Controls

Setting Default Scope Description
Grab the rope in mid-air true Client Jump or fall into a rope to catch it. Off: get on at a post only
Log back in on the ground true Client Logging out, quitting or a save while you ride puts you back on the ground by a post of the rope. Off: you come back where you hung

Multiplayer

  • Everyone needs the mod, the host or dedicated server included. Jotunn stops a player without it from joining. The first two parts of the version must match (1.0.x).
  • The host's Rules and Riding settings are sent to every player who joins, the post's cost included.
  • Ropes are saved with the world and load from further away than normal, so long ropes work from either end.

Compatibility

  • Requires Jotunn. Patches one game method, PlayerProfile.SaveLogoutPoint (where you come back after logging out mid-ride); riding uses the same game system as a ship's helm.
  • A post moved with a moving mod (such as ZenRedecorate) takes its ropes along if they still fit; otherwise they are taken down, as are ropes whose post another mod removed.

Uninstalling

Posts and ropes stop loading (the game logs them as missing). Take the posts down first to get their materials back.
