README

Ziplines

Build zipline posts, tie ropes up to 150 m between them, and fly down valleys and across fjords at up to 72 km/h.

Features

  • Zipline post. A log post with an iron pulley and a coil of spare rope (Hammer, Misc tab, needs a Workbench). Costs 8 Wood, 4 Leather scraps and 2 Iron.
  • Ropes up to 150 m. Each post holds up to 4 ropes, so one hilltop post can reach the dock, the farm and the mine.
  • Hang on and ride. A trolley rolls along the rope and you hang from its handle with both arms up. Move the mouse and you swivel around. Other players see it all.
  • Real riding. Gravity speeds you up downhill. Uphill you pull yourself along hand over hand, and if you stop pulling you slide back down. An automatic brake slows you down before the far post.
  • No bad ropes. Before tying, the mod checks the rider's whole path and refuses ropes that would drag through the ground, water, trees, rocks or buildings. It tells you why.
  • Works both ways. Ride a rope from either end, or jump into a rope anywhere along it and you catch it.
  • No new hotkeys. It doesn't clash with other mods' keys.

How to use

  1. Build two Zipline posts, up to 150 m apart.
  2. Press Shift + E on the first post: you now carry a rope.
  3. Walk to the second post and look at it: the hover text shows the rope's length, or why it can't be tied (too far, too steep, something in the way). Press Shift + E to tie it.
  4. Press E on either post to ride. With several ropes on one post, look along the one you want.
  5. Or jump (or fall) into a rope anywhere along it: you grab it and ride on in the direction you were going.
While riding Keys
Pull yourself along, even uphill (uses stamina) Hold W
Brake Hold S (or Block)
Swivel around Move the mouse
Let go mid-air (you keep your speed, fall damage applies) Jump, E or Attack

Let go of W on an uphill and you slide back down the rope. Slide all the way back and you're off at the post you started from.

Out of stamina on a long climb? Keep holding W: you hang on to the rope while you catch your breath, then pull on by yourself. If you're overweight you can't pull at all (you're told so), but holding W still keeps you from sliding back.

Carrying a rope. Press Shift + E on the first post to put the rope back, or hold E for a second (hammer away, not looking at a door, chest or post) to drop it. The rope also slips back if you walk further than it is long, go through a portal, sit down, sail or ride, or if someone takes the first post down. You can't ride a zipline with a rope in your hand.

Removing ropes. Take down either post and its ropes come down too. If a rope is taken down while someone is on it, they fall.

Rope thickness, ride sound, volume You Look and sound
Grab the rope in mid-air true You Jump or fall into a rope to catch it. Off = get on at a post only

Multiplayer

Everyone needs the mod. Posts and ropes are new world objects, so Jotunn stops a player without the mod from joining, rather than letting them into a world of ropes they can't see. Ropes are saved with the world and load from further away than normal, so long ropes can be ridden from either end. Other players see you ride.

Compatibility

  • Requires Jotunn.
  • Uses the game's own systems for riding (the same one as a ship's helm), building and saving, so it doesn't replace any vanilla code.

Removing the mod

Posts and ropes stop loading (the game logs them as missing). Nothing else in the world is touched.
