README

Frami

Valheim announces a skill level-up with a small message in the top-left corner. It is easy to miss, and it marks the slowest progress in the game.

Frami replaces it with a popup in the middle of the screen showing the skill's icon, the skill's name, and the level you reached.

Frami is Old Norse for advancement.

What It Does

  • Shows a popup in the centre of the screen when a skill levels up, for about four seconds.
  • Uses the skill's own icon, so every skill looks like itself.
  • Hides the game's corner message while the popup is up, so you get one notice instead of two. The line still goes into the message log in your inventory.
  • Queues popups one at a time when several skills level at once.
  • Marks level 100 with a longer, brighter popup.

Frami is cosmetic. It does not change how fast you level, what a level does, or how much experience anything gives.

Install

Client only. A server install does nothing, and other players do not need it.

Compatibility

Skills added by other mods work, with their own icon and name. Hird's Warband and Huskarl's Gambling both show up without any setup.

If another mod has replaced Valheim's HUD and Frami cannot draw its popup, it stays out of the way and the game keeps its own message. Type frami in the console to see which is happening.

Settings

BepInEx/config/gbv.valheim.frami.cfg, or the Configuration Manager in game. Changes take effect on the next popup.

Setting Default What it does
Enabled true Turn Frami off without uninstalling. The game goes back to its own message.
SuppressVanillaMessage true Hide the game's corner message. Off gives you both.
KeepMessageLog true Keep skill-ups in the message log in your inventory.
MinimumLevel 1 Only show levels at or above this.
Every 1 Show one level in every so many. 5 shows 5, 10, 15. Level 1 and 100 always show.
Skills (empty) Only these skills, comma separated, like Swords,Bows,Sneak. Empty means all.
ShowWhenHudHidden false Whether a popup appears while the HUD is hidden on Ctrl+F.
Scale 1.0 Overall size, from half to double.
VerticalPosition 0.17 Height on screen, as a fraction above the middle. Negative moves it below.
OffsetX / OffsetY 0 Nudge it, if another mod wants the same piece of screen.
Backdrop 0.55 How dark the shading behind it gets. Raise it if the level is hard to read on snow.
Rays true The starburst behind the medallion.
HoldSeconds 3.0 How long the popup stays up before it fades.
GapSeconds 0.45 The pause between queued popups.
QueueLimit 6 How many popups to hold before the oldest are dropped.
ExtraSfx false An extra fanfare on top of the sound the game already plays.
VerboseLog false Write what Frami is doing to the log, for working out why a popup did not appear.

Levels filtered out by MinimumLevel, Every or Skills still get the game's own corner message, so nothing goes unannounced.

Console Commands

Command What it does
frami Whether it is working, and what it is set to.
frami_test [skill] [level] Show a popup without levelling anything, like frami_test sneak 42.
frami_reload Reload the settings after editing the config file by hand.

None of them need admin or cheats, and none of them change your character.

raiseskill in the console does not show a popup. Use frami_test to preview one.
