BetterTombstoneHints
This mod adds info to tombstones about how a player died and on which day, like "Slain by a Troll, Day 42".
Features
- Names the cause: the creature or player that killed you, or a fall, drowning, fire, cold, poison and so on.
- Follows your game language, all 24 the game ships with, and switches the moment you change it.
- Other players with the mod see it on your tombstone, each in their own language.

Building from source
To build you need Windows, the .NET SDK 8 or newer (with the .NET Framework 4.8 developer pack), Valheim and BepInEx. The easiest way to get BepInEx is to install BepInExPack_Valheim in a Thunderstore Mod Manager profile.
git clone https://github.com/JevMods/BetterTombstoneHints.git
cd BetterTombstoneHints
dotnet build src/BetterTombstoneHints -c Release
Then copy src/BetterTombstoneHints/bin/Release/BetterTombstoneHints.dll into BepInEx/plugins.
The build looks for Valheim through Steam and for BepInEx in the Default profile of the Thunderstore Mod Manager. If yours live elsewhere, pass the paths:
dotnet build src/BetterTombstoneHints -c Release -p:ValheimDir="D:\Games\Valheim" -p:BepInExDir="D:\Games\Valheim\BepInEx"
You can also set the VALHEIM_INSTALL environment variable. With no Valheim install at all, point ManagedDir at the valheim_server_Data/Managed folder of the free Valheim Dedicated Server (Steam app 896660). The GitHub workflow does exactly that.
Notes
- Client-side. It needs no server mod, but only players who have the mod see the note.
- The note is written when the tombstone is created, so older tombstones stay as they were.
- Some cause texts may read oddly in your language. Corrections are welcome on the issues page. Languages the game itself only has as English placeholders show English.
