README

DynamicStorage Forge

Functional forge storage that visibly grows as you fill it.

DynamicStorage Forge adds dedicated storage piles and metal stacks for Valheim's ores, scraps and refined metals.

Each piece acts as real storage restricted to its matching resource, while its appearance changes as materials are added or removed. Instead of hiding your forge stock inside ordinary chests, stored resources become a visible part of the workshop.

Ore piles and metal stacks have separate server-controlled capacities, while appearance and visual-fill settings are saved individually to each placed piece.

Dynamic Visual Filling

Your forge storage visibly changes as you fill it.

Ore piles progress through visual stages as more inventory slots are occupied.

Copper Ore piles growing as storage fills

By default, ore piles use:

  • Looks Full At: Match Storage Capacity
  • Ore Pile Capacity: 10 / 20 / 40 / 60 slots

You can also choose a fixed visual threshold or Always Full for a static appearance.

Metal stacks can fill based on either:

  • Occupied Slots — visual size follows the number of inventory slots in use
  • Stored Bar Count — visual size follows the actual number of bars stored

Visual fullness is independent from storage capacity, so larger inventories do not require excessive numbers of rendered objects.

Appearance & Customisation

Resource Piles

Every ore, scrap and resource pile has its own appearance settings, including:

  • Preset
  • Layout
  • Layout Scale
  • Layout Height
  • Model
  • Model Scale
  • Material
  • Finish
  • Visual Vertical Offset
  • Looks Full At

Layouts, models and materials can be mixed and matched rather than being locked to one fixed appearance.

Configuration values act as placement templates. Once a piece is placed, its appearance is saved directly to that object, allowing different piles of the same resource to use different styles while sharing the same server-controlled storage capacity.

Metal Stack Styles

Metal storage uses generated layouts rather than one fixed stack model.

Available arrangement families include:

  • Vanilla Cross-Stacked
  • Parallel Rows
  • Brick Stacked
  • Brick Stacked Sideways
  • Misaligned variants for a less uniform hand-stacked look
DynamicStorage Forge ingot arrangement styles

Metal stacks can also configure:

  • Bars Across
  • Bars Deep
  • Layers High
  • Fill Based On
  • Looks Full At
Custom ingot stack dimensions

The generated visual layout is independent from inventory capacity, so you can change the physical shape of a stack without changing how much it stores.

Pile Appearance Editor

Want to restyle something you've already placed?

Enable:

Appearance Editor → Pile Appearance Editor

Then:

  1. Set the appearance options you want for that resource.
  2. Look directly at an existing DynamicStorage Forge piece.
  3. Press R.
  4. The current appearance is applied and saved to that individual piece.

Existing storage is not automatically restyled when global configuration values change.

Server Configuration

Ore piles and metal stacks have separate server-synchronised capacity settings.

Setting Default Allowed Values Description
Ore Pile Slots 20 10 / 20 / 40 / 60 Storage capacity for ore, scrap and resource piles.
Ingot Stack Slots 20 10 / 20 / 40 / 60 Storage capacity for metal stacks.
Maximum Visual Bars Per Stack 120 10 - 400 Safety limit for generated bar visuals. Does not change storage capacity.

Storage capacity and the visual-bar limit are controlled by the server.

Appearance settings remain separate and are saved individually on placed pieces.

Storage Safety

Stored items take priority when storage capacity changes.

If the server reduces Forge storage capacity, existing piles and stacks are only moved to the smaller layout when their contents can be safely accommodated.

If a piece currently needs more space than the selected capacity provides, it temporarily keeps enough room for its stored items. Once enough stacks are removed, it can automatically return to the configured size.

Incompatible resources are also rejected rather than being allowed into the wrong storage piece.

Multiplayer & Build Menu

DynamicStorage Forge is designed for multiplayer use. Players joining a world containing Forge storage should have the mod installed.

Gameplay-affecting capacities and the maximum visual-bar setting are controlled by the server. Per-piece appearance information is saved to the placed object so players see the intended layout and visual-fill behaviour.

The client-local Show Forge Build Pieces setting can hide DynamicStorage Forge pieces from your Hammer menu without unregistering them or affecting existing placed storage.

Recommended: BepInEx ConfigDrawers

BepInEx ConfigDrawers by Vapok is optional but highly recommended for DynamicStorage Forge.

Forge has a large number of appearance settings across its resource piles and metal stacks, and ConfigDrawers makes them significantly easier to browse and adjust in-game.

Inspiration

DynamicStorage Forge is a ground-up expansion of the dynamic ingot-storage concept.

The original IngotStacks by MySoloTeam and its integration with DynamicStorage Piles helped inspire the project.

Forge expands that idea with modern Valheim resources, server-synchronised storage, dynamic pile and metal-stack visuals, and per-piece appearance customisation.

Requirements

DynamicStorage Forge requires:

  • BepInExPack Valheim
  • Jötunn

Recommended

Installation

Thunderstore / r2modman

Install DynamicStorage Forge through your preferred Thunderstore-compatible mod manager. Required dependencies should install automatically.

Manual Installation

Install BepInEx and Jötunn, then place the plugin at:

BepInEx/plugins/DynamicStorageForge/
└── DynamicStorageForge.dll

Compatibility / Updating

Do not install multiple versions of DynamicStorageForge.dll at the same time.

When updating, replace the previous DLL with the newer version.

Existing placed Forge storage is intended to retain its saved storage and appearance information across supported updates.

CHANGELOG

Changelog

1.0.2

  • Added additional item-protection guardrails when a server reduces Forge storage capacity, with safer handling for full and partially filled piles/stacks during downsizing.

1.0.1

  • Fixed a potential item-loss issue when an incompatible item is dragged directly onto an occupied Forge storage slot.
  • Removed the obsolete inventory-content change notification when only a storage grid's dimensions change, preserving the existing 60-slot preload and safe downsizing behaviour.
  • Made ore/resource pile Looks Full At part of preset identity and application; default pile presets now restore Match Storage Capacity, and changing the value marks the preset as Custom.
  • Corrected visual-stage rounding so the final/full stage appears only when the configured Looks Full At threshold is actually reached.
  • Unified runtime, appearance-editor and mesh-debug visible-stage calculations while preserving one visible stage on empty Forge storage pieces.
