README

Quick Stack

Press one key to stack your inventory into the chests around you, without opening them.

By Nathan's Norse Niceties, a group of small, independent Valheim QoL mods.

What it does

Quick stack

  • Press Ctrl+G (configurable, also for a controller button) and your inventory is stacked into all chests within 10 m. You do not have to open any chest.
  • It works like the Place stacks button of an open chest: only items that a chest already contains are moved into it, so a chest with wood takes your wood and leaves everything else.
  • Equipped items stay with you. Chests that are in use by another player, or private chests that are not yours, are skipped.
  • If no chest is in range, you get a message instead of silence.
  • Works with carts and every other container that you can open.

Item locks

  • Alt + click an item in your inventory to lock it (configurable, also for a controller). A small padlock appears on the slot. Alt + click again to unlock it.
  • Locked items are skipped by quick stack, and by the Place stacks button of an open chest. Use it for your food, tools and everything else that should stay with you.
  • Locks stay with the item, also when you log out. Items you put into a chest are unlocked automatically, so a stack that you take out again is not locked.
  • Locking only protects against stacking: you can still drop, move or eat a locked item yourself.

A locked stack of wood with a padlock The message "Wood locked" A locked item shows a padlock, and a message tells you what you locked or unlocked.

Install

Install it with r2modman or the Thunderstore Mod Manager: search for NathansQol_QuickStack by NathansNorseNiceties and click install. The dependencies (BepInExPack_Valheim, Jotunn and NathansQol_KeyBindings) are installed automatically. Then start the game from that profile.

Manual install: download the zip from the Releases page and use Settings → Import local mod in r2modman.

Hotkeys

Both keys, the stack key and the lock shortcut, are listed in the game's own settings, in the Key Bindings tab (from the Key Bindings mod, which is installed automatically). There you can also give them a controller button; by default no controller button is set, because every button already does something in the game. To lock an item with a controller, give the lock shortcut a combination that includes the select button, for example R3 + A / Cross (hold the right stick button and press the select button on the item). Use a button next to it that the inventory does not use itself: L3 or R3 work well. Do not use LB / RB (they switch the inventory panels), LT / RT (split and drop stacks) or Start / Select (game menu and map). The keys are also in the config file.

Configuration

The config file nathan.qol.quickstack.cfg is created in the profile's BepInEx/config folder after the first start.

Setting Default Meaning
Enabled true Turns the mod on or off (quick stack, locks and padlock icons)
StackKey Ctrl+G Key combination that stacks your inventory into the chests nearby
Radius 10 How far away (in meters) chests are used, 1 to 50
LockShortcut Alt + Left Mouse Shortcut you click an item with to lock or unlock it (was LockModifier in 0.1.0)

Compatibility

  • Saves: the lock is a small marker stored on the item and is saved with your character. If you remove the mod, the marker stays on the items without any effect, and nothing else is changed. You can remove the mod at any time.
  • Multiplayer: works on your own character and does not need to be installed on the server. It uses the game's own chest requests, so access rules and "in use" chests are respected.
  • Controller and Steam Deck: the stack key and the lock shortcut can be bound to a controller button in the Key Bindings tab. Tested with a PlayStation 4 controller.
  • Other mods: items kept in special inventories of other mods (for example the quiver and food bag of EquipmentSlots) are not touched.
  • Game version: developed and tested on Valheim 1.0.x (BepInExPack_Valheim 5.4.2351, Jotunn 2.30.2). After big game updates it may need a new release.

Known limitations

  • Each chest shows its own "stacked" message, so with several chests the messages follow each other quickly.
  • On some Linux desktops Alt + click is used by the window manager to move windows. If the lock does not react, change LockShortcut in the Key Bindings tab to another combination.
  • Locks only protect against stacking, not against dropping, moving or eating an item.
  • Tested on Linux, in single-player worlds and on multiplayer servers, with keyboard and mouse and with a PlayStation 4 controller (through Steam Input). Not tested on Windows or on a Steam Deck.
