This mod requires the following mods to function
ValheimModding-Jotunn
Jötunn (/ˈjɔːtʊn/, 'giant'), the Valheim Library was created with the goal of making the lives of mod developers easier. It enables you to create mods for Valheim using an abstracted API so you can focus on the actual content creation.
Preferred version: 2.30.2denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim
BepInEx pack for Valheim. Preconfigured with the correct entry point for mods and preferred defaults for the community.
Preferred version: 5.4.2351README
SkillTalentTrees
Meaningful skill choices for Valheim. Version 0.3.0 is an early test build with Woodcutting only. More skills will be added to this same mod. Mining is archived separately.
Open and spend points
Open the normal Skills panel and click the arrow beside Woodcutting. Hover a talent to read its effect, then click the node to invest one point. There is no separate invest button. Locked or maxed nodes cannot spend points. The panel keeps Valheim's native wood, gold, and fonts.
The tree has four rows: 1 → 2 → 3 → 2. Every talent has five ranks. Fill the base talent to 5/5 to unlock row two. For later rows, fill one of the connected parents to 5/5. When two paths meet, either parent unlocks the node.
| Row | Talent | Effect at 5/5 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Steady Swing | 40% less axe attack stamina |
| 2, left | Careful Edge | 50% less axe durability loss |
| 2, right | Lucky Chop | 50% chance for +1 matching wood per damaging axe hit |
| 3, left | Timber Haul | 50% less carried wood weight |
| 3, middle | Kindling | Guaranteed +1 ordinary wood per damaging axe hit (20% chance per rank) |
| 3, right | Seasoned Cutter | Double Woodcutting XP (20% more per rank) |
| 4, left | Woodland Porter | 40% less remaining wood weight; 70% total reduction when combined with Timber Haul |
| 4, right | Resin Tapper | 50% chance for +1 resin per damaging axe hit |
Connections: Steady Swing → Careful Edge / Lucky Chop; Careful Edge → Timber Haul / Kindling; Lucky Chop → Kindling / Seasoned Cutter; Timber Haul or Kindling → Woodland Porter; Kindling or Seasoned Cutter → Resin Tapper.
Points and saved progression
Earn one point at every five Woodcutting levels: 20 ordinary points through level 100, plus five bonus points at 100, for 25 total. There are 40 ranks available, so you cannot buy everything. Woodcutting and Axes are separate base-game skills; points come from Woodcutting.
Earned points survive skill loss; regaining levels never duplicates them. Allocations save with your character. On upgrade from the four-talent prototype, existing allocations are refunded once, while highest recorded level and earned points are retained. Resets remain free with a confirmation click.
Effects and co-op
Bonus drops require real axe damage to a standing tree or fallen log handled by TreeBase/TreeLog. The tool must meet the target's tier. Each successful swing can roll again on the same target, with at most one set of rolls per swing per target. Lucky Chop, Kindling, and Resin Tapper roll independently and can all reward the same hit. The hitter's ranks are used; nearby players do not add their talents. Physical drops can be collected by anyone.
Lucky Chop selects wood from the target's normal tree/log drop chain. Kindling adds ordinary Wood. Resin Tapper adds Resin, including on logs. Buildings, creatures, collision damage, bushes and stumps handled by other destructible systems do not receive these drops. Stamina and durability benefits also apply to axe combat. Weight benefits affect your inventory total, not item tooltips or chest/cart weights.
Install or update
Close Valheim and install/update SkillTalentTrees in r2modman. Every player and any dedicated server must have the same version. Dependencies: BepInExPack Valheim and Jötunn 2.30.2 or newer.
For a manual update, replace the existing SkillTalentTrees.dll in your active profile's BepInEx/plugins folder. Do not leave a second copy elsewhere. The zip's plugin is in plugins/SkillTalentTrees/SkillTalentTrees.dll. The name and folder stay the same between releases.
If you still have the original MiningTalents or WoodcuttingTalents standalone plugins, remove/disable them once before using SkillTalentTrees. Their duplicate loading is intentionally blocked. Mining save data is not changed.
Practice and testing
Use a test world/character and enable temporary practice points inside the panel. Spend five points in Steady Swing, then follow either branch. Practice does not change your actual skill level or normal allocations; turning it off or leaving the character discards temporary allocations. Chopped wood, bonus items, and world changes remain.
Compilation and automated tests for point thresholds, branch prerequisites, budget limits, valid save round trips, corrupt-save preservation, legacy refunds, and effect values pass. The previous native panel was confirmed working by in-game screenshots. The expanded eight-node interface and new gameplay effects still need live testing, including multiplayer. Controller navigation and other-mod compatibility remain unverified. Mods changing XP, weight, axes, or tree damage may combine with or conflict with these effects.
