ParchmentMap
A craftable map that replaces the game's map, in no-map worlds too. It works only while held in your hand, each parchment keeps its own explored area and marks, and the cartography table draws your notes onto it and copies maps between parchments.

Parchment Map
A map you have to make, carry and keep up to date yourself. It replaces the game's own map, and it is just as much
at home in worlds played without a map (the nomap world modifier, part of the Hardcore preset).
You craft a parchment at the workbench. The map exists only on that parchment:
- The map opens only while the parchment is in your hand. Put it away and there is no map again.
- The land is charted only while you walk with the parchment in your hand. Both hands are busy: no shield, no weapon, no punching.
- What you see is first only noted down. It appears on the map when you use a cartography table.
- The map is just a picture. It shows neither you nor other players, no pings, shouts or raids, and it does not follow you: it opens where you last looked.
- Marks go only where the map is already drawn. That includes boss marks from runestones: if the place is not on your map yet, you only get turned towards it.
- No pings. You cannot point at a place and have it appear on everyone's map. A place is shared by words, or through the cartography table. Pings from other players are not shown either.
- Whistle instead: the Z key, the last slot of the emote wheel (that is the way on a gamepad), or
/whistlein chat. Your character raises a hand to the mouth and gives a long finger whistle, echoing off the valley: nothing appears on any map, but the others hear where you are — the sound comes from your direction and fades with distance, so they can walk to you. It costs stamina, you cannot sprint while whistling, and each player's whistle has its own pitch. Creatures hear it too, like a pickaxe on rock, and come running. - A compass, once you have iron — and lightning. A separate item, put together from parts like a real one: a bronze case, an iron needle magnetised by the lightning of an obliterator, a wooden lid. Carry it in your bag — no need to hold it, your hands are busy with the map. Open the bag and the needle swings inside the compass icon and settles on north; open the map and the compass lies in its top left corner; keep it on the hotbar and its needle is always in sight. The map is drawn north up, so now the two agree.
- A detailed picture, if you want one. With the separate SatelliteMap mod installed, zooming in shows the drawn part of the parchment as the world itself: relief, shores, forest, the paths you have made, buildings, ruins and boss altars. How detailed it is decides the parchment (for now: the
DetailLevelsetting). Without that mod everything else works the same. - The map shows the land as you saw it, not as it is now. Build a house, lay a road, cut a forest: the parchment does not know. Walk there again with the parchment in your hand to note the changes, then visit a cartography table to draw them. Needs SatelliteMap 0.2.0 or newer on the server and on your side; with an older one the picture follows the world live.
- Every parchment is its own map. A fresh parchment is blank. Drop it, put it in a chest, hand it to a friend: the explored area and the marks travel with the item.
- The cartography table copies maps between parchments, so a lost parchment is not lost progress.
How to use it
-
Once you have iron, make a Compass (all recipes configurable):
- at the forge: a Bronze compass case (1 bronze) and an Iron needle (1 iron);
- put the needle into an obliterator (the game's own: 8 iron, 4 copper and a thunder stone from Haldor) and pull the lever — the lightning makes it a Magnetised needle. Put the needles in alone: everything else in there burns;
- at the workbench: a Wooden compass lid (2 fine wood), then the Compass itself: the case, the magnetised needle, the lid and 2 bronze nails.
Keep the compass anywhere in your bag; open the bag or the map to see the needle, or put it on the hotbar to keep it in sight.
-
Craft a Parchment map at the workbench: 2 deer hide, 1 coal, 1 feathers (configurable).
-
Equip it like a tool. While it is in your hand, walk around: the parchment notes down what you pass.
-
At a cartography table, with the parchment in your hand:
- Read draws your notes onto the map and copies everything the table already knows onto your parchment.
- Write does the same and also adds your map to the table's records.
-
Open the map with the usual key (M) while the parchment is in your hand. Marks are placed as usual, on drawn land only, and are stored on the parchment.
-
Read a runestone with the parchment in your hand: the boss mark is added if that place is already on the map. Without the parchment, or if the place is still blank, you are only turned towards it.
To copy a map: hold parchment A and Write, then hold parchment B and Read. On a world where items are deleted on death, Write before you leave home: a new parchment will get everything back from the table.
A mark you erase stays erased: it does not come back from the table, and your next Write removes it from the table too.
The tooltip of a parchment shows how much of the world is charted on it, how much is still waiting for a table, how many already drawn places you have charted anew (changes waiting for a table), and how many marks it has.
Copying through the table copies the picture too: a parchment that reads the table gets every place the way the most recent cartographer saw it.
Installation
The server and every player need the mod, in the same minor version; the game refuses the connection otherwise. This is on purpose: a client without the mod does not know the item and would silently delete parchments from chests it touches.
Before you play your character without the mod, leave your parchments in a chest: an unmodded game drops unknown items from the inventory.
In a world that has the map enabled the mod takes the map over as well (rule ReplaceVanillaMap): no minimap, no map
on M, nothing gets charted until you hold a parchment. The map your character already had is not lost: it stays in the
character file, hidden, and is back as soon as the rule is switched off. It is not copied onto parchments.
With the rule off, the mod does nothing in such a world: the item can be crafted but is of no use.

Notes
- Your character's own map of that world (the one the game keeps in the character file) is left untouched.
- The table keeps the parchment records separately from the vanilla shared map data, so removing the mod leaves tables as they were.
- A parchment belongs to the world it was first used in. In another world it cannot be read, and nothing is drawn on it.
- The parchment stores only which snapshot of each place it shows; the snapshots themselves are kept by the server (see SatelliteMap, "Snapshots": back that file up together with the world).
- Parchments and tables made before 0.3.0 keep working. Their drawn places get a snapshot of the world as it is at the moment you first hold the parchment with 0.3.0; from then on they change only through walking and the table, like everything else.
приходят на звук. Свист тратит выносливость, пока рука у рта — бежать нельзя, слышен за 180 м (ванильный крик — за 70);
CHANGELOG
Changelog
0.6.8
- Server journal. The server (or the player who hosts the world) keeps a log next to its saves,
parchmentmap/<world>.<id>.journal-<year>-<month>.log, so that you can find out afterwards how something got onto a map:- who joined and left, died and respawned, with date and time;
- which parchments a player carries when they join and which one they take in hand, with how much is drawn on it;
- which zones a player charted with the map in hand, in batches every half a minute;
- every use of a cartography table: who, which table, Read or Write, how many of their own notes were drawn, what the parchment got from the table and what the table got from the parchment (cells with the area they cover, marks);
- the tables themselves, checked by the server every half a minute: a new table, changed records, a table that is gone.
- Each parchment gets its own short id, so the journal can tell one sheet from another.
- New server rule
Journal(on by default). The journal only records; nothing in the game changes. - Players on 0.6.7 and older can still join, but they send no reports: for them the journal has only what the server sees by itself (joining, leaving, changes of table records). Update the server to get the journal at all.
0.6.7
- The compass can be taken off the open map with a key (K by default,
CompassMapKey) and put back with the same key. Without it the map keeps the compass rose with the cardinal directions, drawn in full: the same rays now meet in the centre. The choice is remembered (CompassOnMap). - The key is shown in the map's own row of key hints at the bottom, to the left of "Add pin": "Hide compass" or "Show compass". The hint appears only while the compass is in your bag.
- Only what players see changed: 0.6.x versions play together, no need to update the server.
0.6.6
- The compass in the bag and on the hotbar now reads the same way as the one on the map: the top of the compass is north, and the red end of the needle shows which way your character faces. Before, the pocket compass showed where north was from where you stood, so for the same heading its needle pointed the mirrored way — up and to the left in the pocket, up and to the right on the map.
- Only what players see changed: 0.6.x versions play together, no need to update the server.
0.6.5
- On the map the needle shows where your character faces: the compass rose and its letters stay put, north up like the map itself, and the red end of the needle turns to your heading — face south-west and it points between S and W. In 0.6.4 the needle always pointed north, whichever way you faced.
- Only what players see changed: 0.6.x versions play together, no need to update the server.
0.6.4
- On the open map the compass lies on a compass rose with the four directions marked (N, E, S, W; С, В, Ю, З in Russian). The rose follows the map, north up. The needle always points north, and the case turns with your character instead: the red mark on it shows where your character faces, right on the map.
- The compass on the map is a bit smaller, so that the rose fits into the corner.
CompassPositionnow places the rose. - Only what players see changed: 0.6.x versions play together, no need to update the server.
0.6.3
- The needle follows where your character faces, not the camera. The compass is in your character's bag: swing the camera around while standing still and the needle stays put; the character turns (walking, fighting, aiming) and the needle turns too.
- The needle on the hotbar turns smoothly with Extra Slots installed. That mod redraws the hotbar only when something changes, otherwise once a second, and the needle jumped once a second with it; now the needle is turned every frame on its own.
- Only what players see changed: 0.6.x versions play together, no need to update the server.
0.6.2
- The compass works from the hotbar too: put it into the first row of your bag and its needle keeps turning right there on the hotbar, following your view, so you can keep north in sight all the time.
- Only what players see changed: 0.6.x versions play together, no need to update the server.
0.6.1
- The compass is no longer on screen all the time. Open your bag: the needle swings inside the compass icon and settles on north. Open the map: the compass lies in its top left corner. Either way only while the compass is in your bag.
- The compass icon is drawn at an angle now, like the game's own icons; elsewhere (hotbar, chests, workbench) its needle simply points up.
- While the bag or the map is open the camera does not turn, so the needle shows where you were looking when you opened it.
CompassPositionnow counts from the top left corner of the map. A config that still has the old default is moved there by itself.- Only what players see changed: 0.6.x versions play together, no need to update the server.
0.6.0
- The compass is put together from parts, like a real one. At the forge: a bronze case (1 bronze — bronze does not pull the needle aside) and an iron needle (1 iron). At the workbench: a wooden lid (2 fine wood).
- The needle has to be magnetised by lightning: put it into an obliterator and pull the lever. The strike turns every iron needle inside into a magnetised one, and the game says "Thor bestows a gift upon you!". Anything else in the obliterator burns as usual, so put the needles in alone.
- The compass is assembled at the workbench: the case, a magnetised needle, the lid and 2 bronze nails. It used to be forged straight from 2 iron, 3 fine wood and 2 resin.
- New server rules
CompassCaseRecipe,CompassNeedleRecipe,CompassLidRecipe;CompassRecipeis now the assembly. A config that still has the old default compass recipe is switched to the new one by itself; a recipe you set yourself stays as it is. - Compasses you already have keep working.
- New items: the server and every player need 0.6.0, all at once.
0.5.2
- The whistle is in the emote wheel now: the last slot, after the game's own emotes, so those stay where they were. On a gamepad, where there is no Z key, this is how you whistle.
- A chat command
/whistle, next to/waveand the others; the chat's list of emotes mentions it. - Both do exactly what the Z key does: the hand to the mouth, the sound, the stamina and the pause between whistles.
- Only the menus changed: 0.5.x versions play together, no need to update the server first.
0.5.1
- A new whistle sound: one long finger whistle, "Hey!", with an echo rolling off the end of it like in an open valley. The 0.5.0 whistle was a thin two-note chirp and sounded like a bird singing.
- The sound is now a recorded file inside the mod instead of being computed in the game, so everyone hears exactly the same whistle.
- Whistling has a gesture: the free hand goes up to the mouth (the left one when you hold the map), and everyone around sees it. The whistle sounds once the hand is there.
- No sprinting while the hand is at your mouth: you walk at a normal pace, and no stamina goes to running.
WhistleHandOffsetfine-tunes where the hand ends up. - Creatures hear a whistle too, just like a pickaxe hitting rock: anything within 100 m comes to see who is there. New server rule
WhistleNoise(0: creatures do not hear it). - Players still on 0.5.0 can play alongside; their whistles simply stay quiet to creatures until they update.
- Only the sound changed: 0.5.0 and 0.5.1 play together, no need to update the server first.
0.5.0
- Whistling. Press Z (rebindable) and your character whistles: a real sound in the world, no mark on anyone's map. It is how you call someone over now that pinging is gone — the others hear which way you are and roughly how far, and walk to you. Carries 180 m by default, fades with distance and is silent beyond; the game's own shout carries 70 m for comparison.
- A whistle costs stamina (12 by default), so it stays for when it matters, with a short pause between whistles. New server rules
WhistleStamina,WhistleRange,WhistleCooldown; the key is your own settingWhistleKey. - Every player's whistle has its own pitch, so you can tell who is calling.
- Fixed: the compass needle followed your body instead of your view. Standing still and turning the camera did not move it; now it follows where you look.
- Server and players need the same minor version, so everyone has to update.
0.4.0
- A compass. A separate item forged at the forge, iron required: carry it in your bag and a needle on screen keeps pointing north while you turn. It is not held in hand, so it works together with the map, and the map is drawn north up. New server rule
CompassRecipe, andCompassPosition/CompassScaleto place it on your screen. - No more pings. Clicking a place on the map no longer puts it on everyone's map: a place is shared by words or through the cartography table. Pings from other players are not shown either, so this holds even if someone still runs an older version. New server rule
BlockPings, on by default; set it tofalsefor the old behaviour. - Server and players need the same minor version, so everyone has to update.
0.3.0
- The parchment now replaces the game's map in worlds that have the map enabled too, not only in no-map worlds: no minimap and no map on M without a parchment in hand. New server rule
ReplaceVanillaMap, on by default; set it tofalseto keep the old behaviour (the mod does nothing where the map is enabled). - The map your character already had in such a world is left untouched in the character file and comes back when the rule is switched off. It is not copied onto parchments.
- The detailed picture (SatelliteMap 0.2.0 or newer) now shows the land as it was when you charted it, not as it is now. A new house or road appears on the parchment only after you walk there again with the parchment in your hand and then visit a cartography table. The tooltip counts the places charted anew that still wait for a table. Copying through the table copies the picture as well: the most recent cartographer wins.
- Parchments and tables made with older versions keep working: their drawn places get a snapshot of the world as it is when you first hold the parchment with 0.3.0. Parchments touched by 0.3.0 cannot be read by older versions.
- Server and players need the same minor version, so everyone has to update. For the "as charted" picture the server needs SatelliteMap 0.2.0 as well; with an older one the picture stays live.
0.2.0
- Works together with the new SatelliteMap mod (optional): zooming in shows the drawn part of the parchment as a detailed top-down picture of the world, with relief, forest, player-made paths, buildings, ruins and boss altars.
- New server rule
DetailLevel(0-3) decides how detailed that picture is. It is the groundwork for parchment grades: the level will come from the grade of the parchment. - Maps made with 0.1.0 keep working. Server and players need the same minor version, so everyone has to update.
0.1.0
- First release: a craftable parchment map for no-map worlds. It works only in your hand, keeps its own explored area and marks, gets drawn at the cartography table and can be copied through it. The map is a picture: no player markers, marks only on drawn land.
