README

Horn of Heimdall / Рог Хеймдалля

Adds a craftable Horn of Heimdall — an item that lets you send two kinds of signals to nearby players:

  • Navigation call (default key: G) — a simple "I'm over here" signal other players can hear and reply to.
  • Battle alarm (Shift + G) — a louder signal that scares wildlife, aggravates nearby enemies, and grants a combat buff (stamina regen, reduced stamina drain, instant + bonus adrenaline) to every ally in range.

Sound is fully 3D and dynamic: distance falloff, low-pass filtering through obstacles, wind/rain dampening, an echo pass, and (in Simulation mode) an occasional acoustic-shadow effect when the horn is blown behind cover.

The mod automatically shows Russian text if your Valheim client's language is set to Russian, and English for everyone else — no extra setup needed.

Requirements

Both are installed automatically if you use a mod manager (r2modman / Thunderstore Mod Manager).

Crafting

Craftable at a Workbench (level 2+):

  • 2× Fine Wood
  • 1× Eikthyr trophy
  • 2–3× Leather Scraps
  • 2× Copper
  • Bronze (upgrades only, cost increases per quality level)

Controls & Config

Setting Default Description
ActivationKey G Key used to blow the horn (Shift+key for the battle alarm)
GlobalCooldown 3s Minimum time between any two horn uses
HornMode Simulation Sound behaviour: Arcade / Realistic / Simulation
MasterVolume 0.5 Overall horn volume
Navigation call radius, cooldown, durability cost configurable in the Navigation Call section
Battle alarm radius, cooldown, stamina/durability cost, buff strength & duration configurable in the Battle Alarm section
DebugLogging false Verbose debug logging (hand-position hierarchy, etc.) — leave off unless troubleshooting

Full list of options generates in your BepInEx config/ folder after first launch.

Notes on multiplayer behaviour

  • The battle alarm's buff applies to every ally within range who hears it, not just whoever blew the horn — everyone who receives the buff also starts their own cooldown on it.
  • The buff does not refresh/stack if the target already has it active.
  • Tamed animals are never scared or aggravated by the horn — only wild creatures and monsters react.

Known limitations

  • If an ally is standing within ~3m of whoever blows the horn, they may be treated as "the blower" for buff purposes and not get buffed themselves — a fix is planned.

CHANGELOG

Changelog

2.1.1

  • Localization language detection switched from Localization.instance (unreliable/wrong assembly) to PlayerPrefs.GetString("language") — fixes a build error and is more robust regardless of when the mod's code runs relative to the game's own localization init.

2.1.0

  • Rebuilt against current Valheim 1.0.14 API — fixes a MissingMethodException crash in Character.Message that occurred on load.
  • Added English/Russian localization: the mod detects the game's own language setting and shows Russian to Russian-language clients, English to everyone else. Covers item name/description, buff name/tooltip, and all in-game messages.
  • Config file is now in English (section names and descriptions) for wider compatibility with config-management tools.
  • Battle alarm buff now starts a cooldown for everyone who receives it, not just whoever blew the horn.
  • Confirmed: the buff does not refresh/stack if the target already has it, and tamed animals never react to the horn.
  • Bronze cost for horn upgrades increased (was +1 Bronze per quality level, now +3).
  • Cooldown message changed to "Надо перевести дыхание... (N сек)" / "Catching your breath... (Ns)".
  • Fixed a potential NullReferenceException if the echo/acoustic-shadow coroutines started before GameCamera.instance existed.
  • Fixed possible duplicate RPC registration when reloading into a new world/server without restarting the game.
  • Hand/item position adjustment no longer uses per-frame reflection (Traverse) — cached once at startup for better performance.
  • WAV loader rewritten to walk RIFF chunks properly instead of scanning the file for text patterns, with proper error handling for corrupt or unsupported (non-16-bit) files.
  • Activation key is now parsed once and cached instead of every frame.

2.0.x and earlier

  • Initial versions (pre-1.0.14 compatibility).
