README

Valheim Paintings

Stop on a ridge at sunset, hold a key, and take the view home. This mod paints part of your screen onto two planks of wood, and the painting hangs on your walls like any other piece.

Painting

Hold P. The game's interface goes away and a frame shows the square that will be painted, with the rule of thirds drawn inside it. You keep control while you hold the key: walk, turn, pull the camera in or out until the view is right. Let go and it is painted.

A painting costs 2 wood. It arrives in your inventory as a Painting item, its icon being the picture itself, so a chest full of them reads at a glance.

Hanging

The hammer's Furniture tab has a Painting piece, whose only cost is one Painting. It is a 2 x 2 panel of planks standing upright, the picture covering its whole face. The placement preview shows the painting that will go up, and the hammer menu shows it as the piece's icon.

The panel snaps edge to edge with its neighbours, so a gallery lines up by itself. Hold the alternate placement key (left shift by default) to place it freely.

Taking it down

Removing a painting with the hammer drops it on the ground with its picture, ready to hang somewhere else. A painting destroyed by damage falls with its picture too: a troll going through your house does not erase a view you cannot take again. DropOnDamage turns that off.

To get rid of a painting for good, feed it to an obliterator.

Where the picture lives

In the painting itself. The image is a small JPEG, 384 pixels and at most 32 KB by default, stored in the item's data and then in the piece once it hangs. It follows the painting into chests, onto the ground, into your character save and into the world save.

Settings

BepInEx/config/Tchernobill.Valheim_Paintings.cfg, written on first launch.

Key Default What it does
Enabled true master switch, nothing is hooked when false
CaptureKey P held to frame, released to paint; F11 and F12 are taken by the game and by Steam
WoodCost 2 wood taken for one painting
DropOnDamage true a painting destroyed by damage drops with its picture instead of being lost
ScreenFraction 0.5 side of the painted square, as a fraction of the screen height
ThirdsGrid true draw the rule of thirds inside the frame
TextureSize 384 side of the picture a painting carries, in pixels
JpegQuality 75 quality of that picture, lowered automatically to fit under MaxBytes
MaxBytes 32768 hard ceiling for one painting's picture
ExportPng false also save each capture as a full resolution png, a copy for you to keep
ExportFolder empty where those png files go; empty writes under BepInEx/config/Valheim_Paintings/<world>
CanvasGap 0 distance between the picture and the planks, only useful if wood shows through
Diagnostics false log the geometry of every painting as it appears

TextureSize and MaxBytes are what a painting costs in the world save. The defaults leave room for a large gallery; raise them for sharper pictures on a world with few paintings.

The png export is never read back and never deleted by the mod. Destroying a painting in the game does not touch the copy on your disk.
