WolfStars

High-star creatures get bigger and gain a colour band per star (orange at level 20), and drops stop growing past a per-creature cap. Tames can't damage buildings. Every tameable (incl. LetMeTameYou's), each on/off. Install on server and all clients.

WolfStars

Makes high-star creatures look the part and keeps their drops sane. Built for servers that breed tames past the vanilla 2-star limit (for example with BreedingTweaks).

What it does

Looks. Vanilla Valheim only has a look for 1-star and 2-star creatures; anything higher looks like a plain 0-star animal. WolfStars gives every star above 2:

  • a little more size (+5% per star, up to 1.5x), and
  • a colour band: 3 blue, 5 teal, 7 green, 9 yellow, 11 red, 13 magenta, 15 purple, 17 silver, and orange at 19 stars (level 20).

Drops. Vanilla doubles a creature's drops with every star, so a 19-star wolf would drop the 100-per-stack maximum of everything. WolfStars makes anything above 3 stars drop like a 3-star creature (hens, lox and bears: above 1 star, since they already drop a lot).

It applies to every tameable creature, each with its own on/off switch in the config: the vanilla tames Wolf, Boar, Lox, Hen (chicken), Asksvin, plus Deer, Neck, Bjorn, Hare, which LetMeTameYou makes tameable. All are on by default. Creatures from other mods can be added by prefab name.

The drop cap works for every listed creature. The new looks need the creature to have the game's 1-2 star look to build on; creatures without one (some small animals) only get the drop cap.

Install

Install on the server and every client (drops are rolled by the player's game that owns the creature, and the looks are drawn by each player's game). Requires BepInExPack Valheim.

Configuration

BepInEx/config/wick.wolfstars.cfg:

Setting Default Meaning
Wolf, Boar, Lox, Hen, Asksvin, Deer, Neck, Bjorn, Hare true [Creatures] - one on/off switch per creature
MaxStars 19 [<creature>] - highest stars for that creature when [Breeding] LimitStars is on
LimitStars false [Breeding] - on = cap listed creatures at their MaxStars (leave off if another mod handles max levels)
DamageMultiplier 2 [ButcherKnife] - butcher knife damage vs tamed creatures (1 = vanilla)
ScaleWithStars true [ButcherKnife] - also multiply by the tame's level, so high-star tames take as many hits as 0-star ones
AbbreviateStars true [ValheimRadar] - with ValheimRadar installed, its pins show many stars as e.g. 19x★ (like BetterUI)
AbbreviateFrom 5 [ValheimRadar] - star count from which the short form is used
LongTameNames true [Names] - rename box for tamed creatures takes longer names
NameLength 30 [Names] - longest tame name you can type (vanilla 10)
ControlBreeding false [Breeding] - do what BreedingTweaks does (for using WolfStars alone); leave off with BreedingTweaks
LevelUpChance 5 [Breeding] - % chance a newborn/egg is one level above its parent
MaxLevel 20 [Breeding] - highest level reachable that way (20 = 19 stars)
MaxCreatures 0 [Breeding] - animals nearby before breeding stops (0 = game's value)
FixHighStarEggs true [Eggs] - eggs from high-star animals still count in recipes (raises every egg item's max quality)
MaxEggQuality 25 [Eggs] - keep at or above your highest creature level
OneHitKill true [ButcherKnife] - every butcher knife hit kills the tame (then DamageMultiplier / ScaleWithStars are unused)
TintStyle Glow (bear: Fur) [<creature>] - Glow = faint glow in the band colour; Fur = the fur colour itself turns towards it (for fur that can't glow)
FurHue / FurSaturation 0.07 / 0.4 [<creature>] - TintStyle Fur only: the fur's own hue, and extra colour strength
AddMissingLooks true [Looks] - creatures with no star looks at all (the lox) get them added
TintAllParts true [Looks] - creatures built from several meshes (the bear) are coloured on every part
KeepModelSize true [Looks] - creatures built at a size other than 1 (the hen) keep it when they get stars
ChestsKeepQualities true [Eggs] - with BetrValheim: auto-collect only puts an egg into a chest holding that egg at the same quality
DrawersKeepQualities false [Eggs] - with BetrValheim: each drawer keeps one egg quality and hands eggs back at it (off = BetrValheim's own drawers: starred eggs come out as quality 1)
ExcludeItems DragonEgg [Eggs] - hatching items the egg fixes leave alone
FixZeroQualityEggs true [Eggs] - plain eggs stored with quality 0 (shown in recipes but refused when crafting) become normal quality-1 eggs
NoStructureDamage true [Tames] - tamed creatures do no damage to build pieces (a swing or lox stomp that catches a wall)
ExtraCreatures (empty) [Creatures] - more prefab names, comma separated
MaxDropStars 3 (Hen, Lox, Bjorn: 1) [<creature>] - above this many stars, that creature's drops stay at this level
MaxDropStars 3 [Drops] - the same, for creatures added via ExtraCreatures
GrowWithStars true [<creature>] - false keeps that creature at its 2-star size (colours and drop cap still apply)
ScalePerStar 0.05 [<creature>] - extra size per star above 2 for that creature
MaxScale 1.5 [<creature>] - largest size for that creature, as a multiple of its 0-star size
ScalePerStar / MaxScale 0.05 / 1.5 [Looks] - the same, for creatures added via ExtraCreatures
Tints (9 bands) fromStars:R,G,B bands separated by ;
GlowStrength 1 Multiplies every tint
NaturalFurUnderTints true Plain fur under the tint so the colour reads cleanly

Use the same config on the server and every client so everyone sees the same colours.

Testing

wolfstars_level <level> (a cheat command - single-player or self-hosted only) sets the level of the nearest listed creature, because the vanilla spawn command caps creatures at level 9.

Changelog

  • 1.8.16 - Tamed creatures no longer damage build pieces ([Tames] NoStructureDamage, on). Hens, lox and bears drop like a 1-star creature at most (default MaxDropStars 1; was 3 = 8x). Existing configs keep their old value - set it by hand. Not published: 1.8.13-1.8.15.
  • 1.8.12 - Egg handling split into two settings: ChestsKeepQualities (on) and DrawersKeepQualities (off by default = BetrValheim's own drawers).
  • 1.8.11 - Release of the 1.8.2-1.8.10 work without the test tracing.
  • 1.8.10 - Fix: eggs taken out of (or dropped by) a drawer now really keep the drawer's quality; the drawer's name shows it. Test build, still traces. Not published.
  • 1.8.9 - Test build: traces drawer egg handling in the log. Not published.
  • 1.8.8 - BetrValheim drawers take starred eggs again: each drawer remembers its egg quality (an empty drawer takes any, a filled one only the same), eggs taken out or dropped keep it, and the hover text shows it. Auto-collect skips a drawer of another quality and moves on to chests. Restock never pulls eggs from drawers. Not published: 1.8.6, 1.8.7.
  • 1.8.7 - Loads after BetrValheim (soft dependency) and logs which BetrValheim methods the egg handling patched. Not published: 1.8.6.
  • 1.8.6 - With BetrValheim: its drawers refuse starred eggs (a drawer keeps no quality, so they came out as plain eggs) and its auto-collect only puts an egg into a chest that already holds that egg at the same quality ([Eggs] SeparateQualities). Not published: 1.8.5.
  • 1.8.5 - The lox (which the game gave no star looks at all) now grows and gets star colours like the others ([Looks] AddMissingLooks; lox TintStyle Fur). Drop capping is named once per creature in the log. Not published: 1.8.4.
  • 1.8.4 - Bears get their star colour on the fur itself (per-creature TintStyle = Glow or Fur, bear default Fur; FurHue, FurSaturation) - bear fur can't glow, so the 1.8.3 glow tint never showed on bears. Not published: 1.8.3.
  • 1.8.3 - Bears (and any creature whose body is several meshes) now get the star colour on every part, not one small piece ([Looks] TintAllParts). LetMeTameYou babies (MiniDeer, MiniNeck...) use their adult's settings. Not published: 1.8.2.
  • 1.8.2 - Fix: starred hens shrank to about half size (the hen model is built at 2x and the game's star sizes replaced that; [Looks] KeepModelSize). Butcher knife now kills a tame in one hit ([ButcherKnife] OneHitKill, on) and is recognised more reliably. The egg fixes leave DragonEgg alone ([Eggs] ExcludeItems). Tamed creatures WolfStars does not cover are named once in the log.
  • 1.8.1 - Fix: plain eggs with quality 0 showed in recipes (e.g. Cooked Egg 1/139) but crafting refused them. [Eggs] FixZeroQualityEggs turns them into normal quality-1 eggs when they load, and new eggs never get quality 0.
  • 1.8.0 - Fix: eggs laid by high-star animals (quality above the egg's max) were ignored by recipes. [Eggs] raises the max quality of every hatching item. Optional built-in breeding control ([Breeding] ControlBreeding, off by default) like BreedingTweaks.
  • 1.6.0 - Longer names for tamed creatures ([Names], on by default, 30 characters).
  • 1.5.1 - ValheimRadar compatibility (optional): its minimap pins show 5+ stars as 19x★ instead of 19 star characters ([ValheimRadar] settings).
  • 1.4.0 - Butcher knife does extra damage to tamed creatures ([ButcherKnife], default 2x and scaled by the tame's level). Optional per-creature star limit ([Breeding] LimitStars, off by default; MaxStars per creature).
  • 1.3.0 - Settings per creature: each listed creature has its own [<name>] section with GrowWithStars (size on/off), ScalePerStar, MaxScale and MaxDropStars. The [Looks] size values and [Drops] MaxDropStars now only apply to ExtraCreatures.
  • 1.1.0 - Every tameable creature with its own on/off switch (adds Lox, Hen, Asksvin and LetMeTameYou's Deer, Neck, Bjorn, Hare). The old [General] Creatures list is replaced by [Creatures] switches + ExtraCreatures.
  • 1.0.6 - Wolf and Boar.
