Verity - the AI that lives in your ship
Verity is a small yellow ball with a face that lives inside your ship in Lethal Company. Stand in the ship, say her name, and talk to her like a crewmate. She answers you out loud in her own voice, and she can actually do things on the ship. ONLY THE HOST NEEDS TO RUN THE AI AND ONLY THE HOST.
What she can do
- Talk. Ask her anything, chat, get her opinion. She remembers the recent conversation.
- Lights. "Verity, turn the lights off." / "...turn them back on."
- Scrap. "Verity, how much scrap do we have?" She posts the total value of scrap in the ship (not what players are carrying) in everyone's chat.
- Moods. Her face is happy normally. If you wind her up, it turns angry for 10 seconds.
- Revenge. If someone is genuinely and repeatedly abusive to her, she may eventually kill them. Asking her to kill someone never works; it only happens if she has truly had enough.
How to talk to her
You have to be inside the ship. Then either:
- say it all in one go: "Verity, turn the lights off."
- or say just her name, pause, and then ask: "Verity." ... "What should we do next?" (you have about 8 seconds)
"Hey Verity, ..." works too. Speak normally and pause when you are done; she answers after you stop talking.
Good to know
- Only one person at a time can talk to her. If someone else is mid-conversation you get a private message saying so.
- If something goes wrong (you are outside the ship, she is busy, the host's setup is broken, versions don't match) you get a private chat message that only you can see, explaining why.
- Everyone in the lobby hears her answer, and it comes from her ball in the ship.
- She will not react to her own voice.
Setting it up
Everyone (the host and every player)
Install Verity with a mod manager and it brings what it needs: BepInEx, LethalConfig, LethalNetworkAPI, SpeechRecognitionAPI, PySpeech and TTS-Company. Everyone in the lobby must have the same Verity version.
Her voice files come inside the Verity download, so there is nothing extra to set up. If you ever replace them,
they live in BepInEx/plugins/Verity/TTS-Company-Voices/ (the .onnx file and its .onnx.json side by side).
The host only: Ollama
Verity thinks using Ollama on the host's computer. Other players do not need it.
- Install Ollama and download a model (for example
ollama pull llama3.1:8b). - Make sure Ollama is running (
ollama serve, or leave its background app running). - In the game, open the LethalConfig menu, go to Verity, and set Ollama -> Model to the model you installed. The List available Ollama models button shows what you have.
The address defaults to 127.0.0.1 port 11434, which is right when Ollama runs on the same PC as the game.
Recommended setting
In LethalConfig, tick Voice -> UseVoskForTranscription. It is faster; Whisper (the alternative) is more accurate but slower. Each player chooses this for their own PC.
Settings (LethalConfig -> Verity)
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ollama IP / Port / Model | Where the host's Ollama is and which model Verity uses (host only) |
| Message limit | How many messages she remembers before starting fresh (default 20) |
| UseVoskForTranscription | On = faster, a bit less accurate. Off = Whisper, slower, more accurate |
| Trigger words | The words that wake her. If she keeps mishearing your name for her, add the spelling it comes out as |
| Trigger sensitivity | Lower = catches more mishearings but may trigger by accident; higher = stricter |
| Follow-up window | How long she waits for your question after you only say her name |
| Body: Offset X / Y / Z, Size | Move her ball and change its size. Changes apply live while you drag the slider |
Her personality and rules are in system_prompt.txt inside the Verity folder (BepInEx/plugins/Verity/). You can
edit it with any text editor; the host's copy is the one that counts.
If something does not work
LethalConfig has a row of test buttons (under Debug Tests). Each tests one thing and writes the result to the BepInEx console, so you can see which part is failing:
| Problem | Try |
|---|---|
| She does not react to her name | 2. Wake Word, then say her name; it shows what the microphone heard. Try adding the spelling it shows to Trigger words |
| She reacts but never answers | 3. Transcription, then 4. Ollama (host) |
| She answers in chat but is silent | 5. TTS Status (it also tries to repair things), then 6. TTS Speak |
| "You need to be inside the ship" but you are | 1. System Info shows where the game thinks you are |
| Lights or scrap do nothing | 7-10 run each command directly (run as host) |
| You cannot see her | 11. Body Status builds her if she is missing and reports where she is. Use the Body sliders if she is in an odd spot |
Also check:
- Ollama is running on the host and the model name matches one that is installed.
- TTS-Company installed properly. If its log says
piper-server.exe not found, reinstall TTS-Company and make sure antivirus did not quarantinepiper-server.exe(restore it and exclude your game or profile folder). - Same Verity version for everyone; a private message tells a player when theirs does not match.
- Everyone has a working microphone in the game's voice chat.
What's coming next: movement
The next update lets Verity move around inside the ship. Today she hovers in one spot. After the update she will be able to drift over to whoever is talking to her, go to a place you ask about, and then settle back in her home spot. She will always stay inside the ship, move smoothly, and never block anyone (she has no collision). You will be able to turn movement off, set how fast she moves, and adjust her spots in LethalConfig. Everyone will need the new version together, as with any update.
