README

Recht

Recht adds a straight Landsknecht greatsword to Valheim. In Dutch, krom means crooked and recht means straight. Recht uses Krom's two-handed moveset, but it's built around a straight grip and a hilt based on real 16th-century swords.

A sword for those who don't bend.

Design: historical first, then made to fit Valheim

Recht started as a faithful model of a real Landsknecht two-hander, based on Albion Swords' Maximilian, a modern reproduction of the German two-handed swords of the early 1500s. The first version used its real measurements: a 104 cm blade, a 29 cm crossguard, twin fullers running 56 cm from the guard, an eight-sided cord-wrapped grip with a double raised band, and a fluted, flared pommel.

That accurate version looked out of place next to Valheim's weapons, which are chunky, low-poly and exaggerated. So it was reworked:

  • A bigger hilt. The crossguard, guard block, grip and pommel were all scaled up by 30%, so the hilt reads clearly at Valheim's camera distance.
  • A broader, heavier blade. It's about 35% wider, 60% thicker and 10–15% longer than the original. Low poly count.
  • A much shorter, slimmer grip. Valheim's two-handers have relatively small grips, and the historical one didn't fit the character model. The grip was cut by about a quarter and slimmed down, which breaks the real proportions but fits the character and animations better.
  • Simpler textures. Instead of polished-steel realism, the steel has broad painted tones, a bright cutting edge and grime in the fullers.
  • One detailed feature. The long, rope-twisted crossguard tips are the Maximilian's signature, so they keep their full detail while the rest of the sword stays chunky. Keeping overall poly count at acceptable levels.

The result is still recognisably a Landsknecht sword.

Stats

Base stats Copied from Slayer: damage, durability, block, weight, knockback, backstab, stamina costs and max quality
Parry bonus 2.5×
Moveset Krom's (three-hit vertical combo, long thrust as the secondary attack)
Reach 12% longer than Krom on both attacks, to match the longer blade
Max quality 4, same as Slayer. The last level needs a higher Black forge level than the game currently has
Skill Swords

The stats are copied from the game's own Slayer item when the game loads, so if a game update changes Slayer, Recht changes with it.

Recipe

Crafted at the Black forge (level 3, same as Slayer).

Material Craft Per upgrade level
Flametal 20 10
Iron 20 10
Bronze 10 5
Asksvin hide 5 3

Installation

Install with r2modman or the Thunderstore Mod Manager. They install the dependencies (BepInExPack Valheim and Jotunn) automatically.

To install by hand, put Recht.dll in BepInEx/plugins/Recht/.

Multiplayer

Every player and the dedicated server must have Recht installed. Jotunn checks this when a player connects and refuses the connection if the mod is missing.

Configuration

The settings are in BepInEx/config/0zzerod.recht.cfg, which is created the first time you start the game. Restart the game after changing a setting.

Section Setting Default What it does

AI use disclosure

This mod was made with help from an AI assistant (Anthropic's Claude), working under 0zzerod's direction, with 0zzerod testing each version in the game:

  • 3D model: made from scratch by Blender scripts the AI wrote, from measurements, reference photos and 0zzerod's feedback.
  • Textures and icon: generated procedurally by code (noise, gradients and patterns) and rendered in Blender. No AI image generation was used.
  • Plugin code: written by the AI and tested in the game.
  • This README: written with AI help.

All design decisions, including the name, look, stats and balance, are 0zzerod's.
