Spear Recall

About

Recall your thrown spear for a configurable Eitr cost. Private map pins and cyan light beams help you find spears before Mistlands. The mod recovers the actual dropped spear through normal pickup, keeping the original item's quality, durability, variant, crafter information, world level and custom data.

The spear must have landed and exist as a loaded item within range. Recall does not retrieve in-flight projectiles, items in unloaded areas, containers or other players' inventories. Normal throwing still costs durability, and other players can pick up your spear.

Requires BepInEx 5 for Valheim. Jötunn is not required.

How to use

  1. Throw a spear normally. Its original hotbar slot stays reserved with a faded icon by default.
  2. After it lands and becomes lootable, middle-click to recall your most recently thrown outstanding spear.
  3. A successful recall spends 10 Eitr by default and returns the original item to its old slot when available. The world's Eitr usage multiplier applies. Recall fails without spending Eitr if the spear is unavailable, out of range, your inventory is full or you lack Eitr.
  4. Alternatively, follow the pin or beam and pick it up normally for no Eitr cost.
  5. Alt + middle-click forgets the latest outstanding throw and frees its reserved slot. The spear stays in the world; use this after another player takes it or it disappears.

Recall and Forget operate during gameplay while menus are closed. Middle-click recalls an outstanding spear in place of another secondary attack. Markers are private. Last-known pins can remain after another player takes a spear or its area unloads. Pins are not saved with your map; tagged spears are rediscovered after reconnecting when their area loads.

Configuration

The first launch creates BepInEx/config/Dyls123.SpearRecall.cfg. Edit it with the game closed, or use a compatible in-game config manager. File edits require a reload or restart; config-manager changes apply to the next relevant action. Existing values are carried into the numbered sections automatically. If both an old and a new section contain the same setting, the new section takes priority.

Section / Setting Default Purpose
01 - General / Enabled true Enable tracking and recall.
10 - Recall / EitrCost 10 Eitr per successful recall before the world multiplier; 0–1,000.
10 - Recall / MaximumRange 100 Range in metres for loaded spear drops; 1–500.
30 - Keybinds / Recall Mouse2 Recall the latest outstanding spear.
30 - Keybinds / Forget Mouse2 + LeftAlt Forget its tracking and release its slot.
40 - Hotbar / ReserveOriginalSlot true Reserve the original slot with a faded icon.
40 - Tracking / MapPin true Show a private map pin.
40 - Tracking / Beacon true Show a private cyan beam and point light.
40 - Tracking / BeaconHeight 3 Beam height in metres; 0.2–20.
40 - Tracking / BeaconWidth 0.12 Beam width in metres; 0.02–2.
40 - Tracking / LightRange 4 Point light range in metres; 0–20. Zero disables the light.
50 - Compatibility / IncludePrefabs Empty Extra exact weapon prefab names to include.
50 - Compatibility / ExcludePrefabs Empty Exact prefab names to exclude. Exclusions win.
90 - Server / LockConfiguration true Lock synced gameplay settings to server administrators.

Shortcuts accept modifiers; None disables a shortcut. Disabling slot reservation lets another item use the old slot, so recovery uses a free slot instead. Set EitrCost to 0 for free recall at any stage.

Server configuration

Install the mod on your client to use your own settings in single-player or on a server without the mod. Install the same version on the server to override the gameplay settings of clients running the mod. Server settings are locked to server administrators by default. Keybinds and display preferences stay local, and your local gameplay values return when you disconnect. Players without the mod do not gain its features.

The server controls Enabled, Eitr cost, recall range and weapon inclusion/exclusion lists. Hotbar reservation, map pins, beacon appearance and shortcuts stay local.

Support

Modded spears: detected automatically through the Spears skill and a projectile that drops the original thrown item on impact. IncludePrefabs allows other weapon classifications using that same path. Lists accept exact comma-separated prefab names, ignoring case.

Item data: a temporary custom-data identifier distinguishes the exact throw from identical weapons and is removed after recovery. Other custom data is retained. Stackable modded spears tag only the thrown unit and remain separate during recovery to preserve their metadata.

Weapon mods with replacement-item spawning or their own projectile and inventory systems may need specific integration. Other automatic weapon-return mods can compete for the same spear.

Manual installation

  1. Install BepInEx 5 for Valheim.
  2. Create BepInEx/plugins/Dyls123-SpearRecall/ in the game installation or active mod-manager profile.
  3. Copy SpearRecall.dll from the release ZIP into that folder.
  4. Keep only one copy of the DLL and launch the game to generate the config.

The versioned ZIP and Dyls123-SpearRecall.zip use the same Thunderstore-compatible layout, with the DLL at the ZIP root. A mod manager installs the package and its declared dependencies automatically.
