README

Hird

A party system for Valheim. Group up with up to seven other players, see everyone's health down the side of the screen, and share skill experience with whoever is near you.

A hirð was a chieftain's sworn war-band. A warband here has a leader, and it lasts as long as that leader is online.

What It Does

  • Warbands of up to eight players. Invite by typing a name, or from a list of who is online.
  • A party list on the left of the screen with each member's name, health and distance. The rows use the game's own health bars, so they match the rest of the interface.
  • Skill experience is shared with warband members near you, in the same skill it was earned in. Chop wood together and you both gain woodcutting.
  • A Warband skill that rises while you play alongside your warband and sets how much of their experience you receive.

Shared Experience

While a warband member is near you, half of your experience goes to them. That is the cost of being in a warband and it never changes.

What changes is how much of their experience comes back to you. That is what the Warband skill raises.

Your Warband level You keep, of your own You receive, from each member nearby
0 50% 50%
50 50% 75%
100 50% 100%

So one member nearby covers what you gave up, and a second is profit. At Warband 100 you take everything each of them earns while still paying the same half, which makes a full warband worth far more than a pair.

If nobody is nearby, nothing changes and you keep all of your own experience. You are never worse off for walking away on your own.

Members have to be within 60 metres to share. Height is ignored, so somebody mining below you still counts as nearby.

The Warband skill rises from time spent near your warband rather than from anything you do. With one member nearby it reaches level 50 in about ten hours and 100 in around fifty; with a full warband, roughly a third of that. As with every Valheim skill, the early levels come quickly and the last ones take much longer.

Using It

Press F7 to open the panel.

  • Warband lists who is in it. The leader gets Promote and Remove on each row; everyone gets Leave.
  • Invite has a name box and a list of who is online. Inviting somebody while you are not in a warband creates one with you as leader.
  • Settings moves the party list and changes its size.

Invitations appear as a banner at the top of the panel and as a message on screen. They lapse after a minute.

How Warbands End

A warband lasts for one session:

  • A member who goes offline leaves it immediately.
  • If the leader goes offline, the warband disbands.
  • A leader who chooses to leave passes the lead on instead.
  • A warband with one member left disbands.

Your Warband skill is saved on your character like any other skill. The warband itself is not saved.

Install

Required on the server and on every client.

A player without Hird has no warbands: they cannot be invited and will not see one. Nothing else is affected for them or for anyone else.

Works on a dedicated server and on an in-game host. Compatible with the rest of the GBV mods and does not require any of them.

Console Commands

Command What it does
hird Show your warband and your current share rate.
hird_invite [name] Ask a player to join.
hird_leave Leave your warband.
hird_fake [0-15] Fill the party list with placeholder members.
hird_warband [0-100] Set your own Warband skill. This is a cheat.
hird_nameplate Report on the game's nameplates. Run it if names over players' heads go wrong, and send the output.

Placeholder Members

hird_fake 7, or the Settings tab, fills the party list with members who do not exist, so you can position and size it without waiting for other players. It is entirely local: nothing reaches the server and no experience changes hands.
