Companion Training
Companion Training turns one existing tamed two-star creature into a persistent named companion. It keeps Valheim's native tame AI wherever possible and adds progression, recovery, mounted travel and personalisation around it.
Current companion species: Boar, Wolf, Lox, Asksvin and Moose.
Creating a companion
Use Ctrl + Use on a tamed two-star supported creature. Choose its name and coat colour, then validate the selection.
Only one active companion is allowed per player. Selecting another retires the previous companion. A retired animal becomes a normal vanilla tame again and loses its pin, recall and Companion commands, but keeps its name, colour, trained size and accumulated statistics. It can be selected again later.
Main features
- Native Follow/Stay interaction through the configured Use key.
- Native pet action moved to
AltPlace + Use. - Permanent dynamic map pin for the active companion.
- Hidden offensive and defensive progression earned by dealing and receiving damage.
- Species-specific health, armor, damage and size progression.
- Mortal companions: the butcher knife and ordinary combat can kill them.
- Passive regeneration after one minute out of combat.
Ctrl + Useconsumes compatible taming food and restores 10% maximum health per second for five seconds, with a one-minute cooldown.- Feeding also works while riding without dismounting; Use alone still dismounts.
- Crafting-station anchor and recall button for lost companions.
- Portal, teleport and dungeon transfer for a nearby active follower.
- Boat boarding through unique free passenger points, with lightweight crossing visuals to avoid destabilising ships.
- Mounted jump, sprint and direct movement controls.
- Player weapon combat and seated animations through OdinMountedCombat.
- Protection for allied players, tames, Dvergr, allied constructions and Master Rings alliances.
Requirements
- BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2351 or newer compatible 5.4 build.
- GoblinHeim ValheimCore 1.0.3.
- OdinMountedCombat 1.0.1.
TameRidingOverhaul is not required and should not be installed alongside the current mounted controls.
For improved movement of all tamed creatures, NicoMods TameAI is recommended but remains optional.
Multiplayer
Install the same version on the server and every client. Companion identity, ownership, progression, colour and recovery data are stored persistently through Valheim's networked world data.
Current scope
The current build is intended for active playtesting on Valheim 1.0.20. Automatic long-distance recovery, boat travel and mounted movement are present, but unusual terrain or modded creatures may still expose pathfinding and animation edge cases.
