MidgardPlus: Megin
An RPG add-on for MidgardPlus, by Odin the Red.
Website and launcher | Discord | MidgardPlus
Megin is an RPG add-on for MidgardPlus. Somewhere between the meadows and the black forest stands Ýdalir, the hall of Ullr's hunters. Pass their trials, swear on the great oath ring, and they wake the megin in you: the inner might the old poems give to gods and heroes. Then you shape it yourself. You build your own powers piece by piece and bind them with oaths that make them stronger, walk a path, take the lodge's work, hear the elders' tales and climb the tower at the edge of the sky.
What is inside
Powers you build yourself
- At the lodge you swear a power in the builder: a shape, an element, what sets it off and the modifiers you want. The builder shows you the power as you start and at full might before you swear it.
- 29 shapes, from a bolt or a volley to a skin, a mist, a fetter or a bulwark. Megin, fire, frost, lightning, poison and spirit.
- Oaths. Bind a power with an oath, like Night only or Blood price, and it costs fewer points, so you have room to make it stronger. Fourteen oaths to choose from.
- Up to four powers, each on its own key. Two of your powers cast close together can answer with a small combo.
- Megin is a bar on your HUD and a skill that rises as you spend it. Sit outdoors at night and it comes back three times as fast.
Affinities
- Cast a lot twig into Mímir's well and the water names your affinity: Styrkr, Hamr, Skot, Smíð, Stjórn, or the rare Óðr. Each favours its own shapes and its own weapons.
- The answer belongs to the character and never changes on a relog.
- Hamskipti, the change of skin, lets you choose again at a real price: half your Megin levels, all your powers, coin that doubles each time and a wait of seven real days.
Paths
- A Drengr walks one of five paths: Berserkr, Bogsveigir, Úlfheðinn, Hagsmiðr or Valdr.
- Each has a gift, five perks learned in order and three lines of small steps: health, stamina, eitr, carry weight, weapon damage or Megin.
- Points come from your Megin level, your rank and the contracts you finish. The first path is free.
Stances and mastery
- Five tiers of Megin: Neisti, Glóð, Logi, Bál and Ásmegin. Your aura burns in the colour of your affinity, and the same power looks stronger at each tier.
- Mastery. Every sworn power grows through use, in five ranks.
- Six stances, learned in order: Hlíf guards, Móðr gathers the next cast, Hljóð hides you, Sjón senses what is near, and a Drengr learns Skjaldborg and Ofrefli.
- A Meistari names one power as the masterwork, and only that slot can hold Hendr Starkaðar, the many hands of the old giant.
The trials and the ranks
- Hringvörðr, the ring warden, sets the Raunir: deeds, bounties and a replay boss felled without dying. Swear on the ring and Eiðbaugr, the oath ring, is yours for good.
- With Lodge quests on, the Raunir become seven staged trials, each judged by its own elder, with more than one way through. Four rival candidates take them beside you.
- You rise from Gestr to Sveinn, Veiðimaðr, Drengr and Meistari. Virðing, your standing at the lodge, is what the higher ranks are earned with.
Máldagi contracts and the elders' tales
- Máldagi, the contract board: tiered work for every land from the Meadows to the Ashlands, with vows for better pay and work for a whole drótt.
- Elders' tales: seven short story lines from the lodge's elders about Ullr and his hunters, each ending in a gift worth having.
- Daily work that comes back every day, five callings with their own contracts, titles and stars, the lodge's saga and the ordeals of Járnviðr.
Himinbjörg
- A stone arena tower stands once in the world, far out in the meadows or the black forest. Varðrún keeps the stair.
- Climb 200 floors by winning fights in the ring: waves of beasts from the lands your world has opened, and a champion of the lodge on every tenth floor.
- Every floor pays coin, Virðing and Megin. Win the top floor and you may challenge for the high seat, until someone takes it from you.
- The server judges every bout.
PvP rules
- Oath powers never touch another player unless the server turns that on. Even then, a power only harms a player while both of you have the game's own PvP switch on, and never a group, party or guild mate.
- Against players, powers hit softer, one hit can only take so much, cooldowns run longer and binds and slows are short. The server sets each of these.
- Powers never harm buildings, ships, carts or tames, and they spare a player standing in their own ward.
Needs MidgardPlus
Megin is an add-on. It needs MidgardPlus 1.51.1 or newer, on the server and on every player, and server and players need the same version of Megin.
Everything starts off
Nothing in Megin changes your game until you turn it on. Turn on The Lodge in the F9 panel (group Megin), in the launcher's Midgard add-ons page, or in BepInEx/config/midgardplus.lodge.cfg. Megin paths, Lodge quests and Himinbjörg each have a switch of their own, also off at first.
Languages
English, Russian, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. The Old Norse names stay as they are.
Install
Use the MidgardPlus launcher from midgardplus.odinthered.dev, or a mod manager. If something breaks or feels off, tell me on Discord.
CHANGELOG
Changelog
0.4.17
made for MidgardPlus 1.57.0.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.57.0. Everything else is the same as 0.4.16.
0.4.16
the courage trial counts any boss now.
- the Hugraun way where you fell a boss only counted MidgardPlus's own replay bosses, so Eikthyr woken again with deer trophies did nothing. now any boss you help bring down within 150 m counts, the game's own too, and the trial says so.
- the "Wake one and fell it again" contract counts the same way.
- the quest light and the cairn stand on the ground or the building under them, never up in a tree.
- saying Farewell in the trial of the marks doesn't fail it any more. nobody takes your merki while you talk, the talk closes when a rival comes at you, and if you start again still hurt from the last try, you aren't failed the moment a rival shows up. Hrafnkell tells you when you can try again.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.56.0.
0.4.15
The same Megin as 0.4.14. On Hexium it now asks for MidgardPlus by the right name, so Hexium finds it and installs it for you.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.56.0.
0.4.14
Hringvörðr stands by the ring stone again.
- in some worlds the ring warden ended up inside the ground under the Ýdalir hall. he, the elders and the contract board now stand on the real floor, and a stuck warden climbs back up when you come near.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.56.0.
0.4.13
megin powers look like magic now.
- every cast gathers Megin in your hands in your affinity colour first.
- shots are proper Megin bolts with a trail in your colour, fire, frost and lightning bolts for those elements, and they fly straight.
- every hit shows its element and makes a sound.
- Ironhide, Mend, Skin, Bulwark, Foresight, Coat, Strike and Brand glow softly on you while they last and fade out when they end. Mark and Fetter glow on the foe.
- Mist, Snare and Stake show their ground ring until they fade, Rush and Slip leave a streak, and holds draw a thin line to the target.
- other players see all of it the same way, and Quake too.
- cards, the quest tracker and the effects all use your affinity colour.
- it stays calm: dim lights, little smoke, and less of it on Lighter graphics Low end.
- one Ýdalir per world. if an update left your world with two, the hall Megin already uses stays Ýdalir and the other one's quest folk quietly leave. nothing you built gets touched.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.56.0.
0.4.12
megin is easier to read and easier to follow.
- every Megin window has bigger words, and they grow with your UI scale. new setting Megin text size makes them bigger still, up to 150.
- the quest tracker on the right shows your next step, a progress bar, how far it is and an arrow that points the way. F10 still moves it.
- new Megin book on Left Alt and J. it has your next step, a short start for new hunters, your quests with every step ticked off and the ones you finished.
- the book's powers page shows your powers and every shape as cards with cost, rest time, what it does and how to unlock it. click a card for the full numbers.
- when a power won't fire it tells you why: not enough Megin and how much you have, still resting, no foe in sight, the lodge hasn't answered yet, or you are still chanting.
- powers that fire on their own, on a parry, a kill or low health, tell you why too, quietly in the corner.
- aimed powers stop grabbing foes behind walls and rocks.
- power keys don't fire anymore while you type in a text box.
- Mend, Ironhide, Skin, Bulwark and Foresight grow your Megin the full amount. they never hit anything, so they only gave a quarter.
- if a power key is also a hotbar key, an attack button or another key in your game, the book tells you.
- Mark, Fetter, Hush and Thread on a boss now say bosses shrug it off, not that the boss is too heavy to pull.
- let go of a great power key too early and it tells you how long to hold it.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.56.0.
0.4.11
megin keeps up with your world.
- power damage now follows the bosses you've beaten: 45 before any boss, about 20 more with each one, the full 180 only after the Fader. a high Megin level can't outhit the weapons of your biome anymore.
- Ýdalir is found again instead of being built twice.
- escorts hold up in the Black Forest and harder land. whoever you walk home gets health for the land you meet them in and grows tougher if you lead them somewhere worse, and heals up again once nobody has hit them for a few seconds. Meadows escorts stay as they were.
- the talk window, the contract board and the power builder grow with your UI scale.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.56.0.
0.4.10
you can cast again.
- no more "you cannot cast while hidden" when you're not in Hljóð. dying in Hljóð, switching character or losing the effect left the game thinking you were still hidden. the stance now drops on death, respawn, logout and the moment its effect is gone.
- if you really are in Hljóð, the message names it and tells you the key or the radial entry to leave it.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.55.1, works with 1.55.2.
0.4.9
Himinbjörg counts your kills.
- killing a wave in the ring now counts on a dedicated server. the kill used to be lost before it reached the keeper, so the floor never ended and all you could do was yield.
- a foe that wanders off out of the ring for 20 seconds is pulled back in. if it wanders off again it counts as fallen.
- if the ring is clear and the keeper hasn't answered, your game tells her again every few seconds.
- the log says which foes keep a wave open, how far out they are and how much health they have left.
- the Ýdalir contract tracker moves out of the way of your status effects, and you can place it yourself with F10.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.55.1.
0.4.8
power looks are back.
- Mend, Ironhide, Bulwark and the other powers you cast on yourself show their full look again, not a tiny one at your feet.
- other players see your whole cast now, the ring, the glow and the rest, along with the hit.
- other players see your Stake too.
- the preview in the power builder keeps its looks to itself.
- if the game is missing a look, the log names it once.
- hover the Megin skill in the Skills window to see your Megin level, rank and affinity. the oath ring shows them too, so no trip to the elder.
- new server setting Megin lost on death. As now keeps it how it is, Small takes a quarter of that, Off takes none.
- every death goes in the server's Megin ledger right away, whatever that setting says.
- the Megin growth setting tells you how Megin is earned and what a level needs.
- two new server settings, Megin from casts and Megin from rewards, tune casting and quest or Himinbjörg pay apart. both start at 1, so nothing changes until you move them.
- new server setting Oath runes, off to start. a rune from Haldor's Megin bounties in MidgardPlus makes powers sworn to its oath hit a fifth harder and cost less Megin while you carry it.
- a cheaper cast still earns the full Megin, so runes never slow your growth.
- new server setting Lodge tales, off to start. ask Hringvörðr who founded Ýdalir and Varðrún who raised Himinbjörg, and they tell you.
- the Ýdalir bench faces into the room in new worlds. in a world you already play, the bench the hall set down turns around the next time you are near. benches you built yourself are left alone.
- Megin does less work every frame, and the server saves contract progress every few seconds in one go, so busy fights and full servers have less to chew on.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.55.0.
0.4.6
admin tools for Megin, in release builds now.
- mpl_lodge megin 50 sets your Megin level, mpl_lodge megin add 5 adds levels, mpl_lodge rank 0 to 4 sets your rank.
- mpl_lodge state shows rank, affinity, level and slots. mpl_lodge reset wipes Megin, and asks you to add confirm first.
- put a player name at the end to do it to someone online. the server ledger changes first and their screen catches up right away, no relog.
- every change an admin makes goes in the server log with who did it.
- the hall's folk can't be wiped by an area kill anymore, and if one goes missing they come back on their own within a few minutes.
- server and players need the same Megin version for the new commands.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.54.0.
0.4.5
Your Megin record survives a crash.
- If a server or game went down right as it saved, a player's Megin record could vanish and they started over. The old copy stays until the new one is safely written, with a .bak kept beside it.
- If a record won't read, Megin reads the .bak instead and says so in the log. Same for quest records, the Himinbjörg ledger and the omen secret.
- Players on 0.4.4 can still join a 0.4.5 server.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.54.0.
0.4.4
Kills count on servers again.
- Hunting contracts count your kills on a dedicated server. Before, a beast the server or another player was running could die without your contract hearing about it.
- If the word of a kill never reaches you, your own last blow in the past few seconds still counts it, once.
- Kills by your risen dead and summons count as yours.
- Marked beasts, escorts and duels read their mark before the body is gone, so those count too.
- Each kill a contract hears about goes in the log as "Megin kill seen", with whether it counted and why not.
- Admins can move Ýdalir with mpl_lodge move, handy if yours ended up ruined or in a bad spot. Stand where you want it and run mpl_lodge move confirm.
- The new spot is checked first, so a bad spot leaves the old hall standing. Player buildings, graves and contract progress stay.
- Server and players need the same Megin version.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.54.0.
0.4.2
Marks you can actually find.
- Search quests that send you after a hidden spot show a pillar of light once you get within about 70 m. Every other quest place shows the same light from far off, and only you see it.
- While you search, the top left says warmer or colder as you move.
- The place and the map pin stay the same after you log back in on a server.
- Server and players need the same Megin version.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.54.0.
0.4.0
Fairer hunts and clearer words.
- A kill counts for the hunter who struck the killing blow, or for that hunter's own tames, and a bow kill counts from as far as 200 m. Kills by other hunters or by beasts no longer count toward your work. Drótt work still shares a kill made by a hunter close by.
- Timed trials and raced contracts set their places within reach of the clock. The road run, the cairns and Svala's road no longer land far beyond the timer when there is no Black Forest near Ýdalir.
- Places for work keep off lava, deep water and steep ground, and so do the beasts and folk set around them. This matters most in the Ashlands.
- A marked beast that runs far from its place is followed instead of being raised again every 30 seconds. Only when it is truly gone does one new beast wait at the mark, and you are told the trail went cold.
- The elder's words about your latest deed are said once for each new deed. After that the elder greets you the usual way, which changes from day to day.
- Hamskipti says why it turns you down: you already follow that affinity, or that is not an affinity you can take.
- The rank page counts the story and the ordeal the same way the server does.
- The contract board shows new work every 10 minutes by default instead of 20, and can be set as low as 5. A config still on 20 or 60 moves to 10 once.
- Himinbjörg remembers when each fight ended, so a shorter rest setting now shortens a rest that is already running. A rest from before this update is cut to the current setting from your next visit.
- Server and clients must run the same version of the add-on.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.54.0.
Also in this version, from 0.3.2:
- Trials and contracts say why they failed, and a refusal tells you how long until you can try again.
- Ring and night steps tell you when you stand outside the ring, how far out you are, and when it is not night yet.
- Shorter waits by default: trial retry 2 minutes, Himinbjörg 2 minutes, contract board 10 minutes, path change 1 day, Hamskipti 2 days.
- Requirements that could not be met are fixed, the arena says when time ran out, and Hamskipti names the trial that is running.
- Admins can type mpl_admin cleartimers to clear the waits for themselves or for a player who is online.
0.3.2
- Trials and contracts say why they failed. The elder names the reason in the center message and in the dialog, and the trial page shows your last attempt.
- A refusal tells you how long until you can try again.
- Ring and night steps tell you when you stand outside the ring, how far out you are, and when it is not night yet.
- Shorter waits by default: trial retry 2 minutes, Himinbjörg 2 minutes, contract board 20 minutes, path change 1 day, Hamskipti 2 days. A config still on the old defaults moves to the new ones once, and a trial retry already running never lasts longer than the current setting.
- Requirements that could not be met are fixed. The night cull has no clock and the night contract is never raced. The Hugraun troll is marked and placed for you. Escorts stay on the Meadows. The iron carry stops burning at a third of your health. Story and ordeal steps wait for their land.
- The arena says time ran out instead of saying you fell, the keeper hides the climb while you rest, and Hamskipti names the trial that is running.
- Admins can type mpl_admin cleartimers to clear the trial retry, the Himinbjörg wait, the path and affinity waits and the contract board, or mpl_admin cleartimers followed by a name to do it for a player who is online.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.53.2.
0.3.1
- Megin speaks Italian: every power, path, contract, elder's tale and the whole of Himinbjörg.
- Admins can type mpl_admin max to test everything Megin has, and mpl_admin reset to start over.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.53.0.
0.3.0
Paths of Megin.
- A Drengr can now walk one of five paths, chosen from Megin training at Hringvörðr: Berserkr, Bogsveigir, Úlfheðinn, Hagsmiðr and Valdr.
- Each path has its own gift, five perks learned in order, and three lines of small steps: health, stamina, eitr, carry weight, weapon damage, a deeper Megin pool or a faster Megin return, depending on the path.
- Perks make the powers of the path cheaper, quicker, farther reaching or harder hitting, and some change the stances: Rönd lets Hlíf and Skjaldborg drain less, Myrkr lets Megin return faster in Hljóð.
- Path points come from your Megin level, your rank and finished contracts.
- The first path is free. Changing it costs coin that doubles each time, a few points for good and a wait, and every perk and step of the old path is forgotten.
- The server checks every path, perk and step, the same as your powers.
- Paths stay off until the server turns on Megin paths.
More work at Ýdalir.
- Máldagi has far more work. Every land from the Meadows to the Ashlands has contracts of its own: necks in the shallows, a troll on the road, leeches in the black water, drakes over the pass, a fuling camp, seekers in the mist, a fallen valkyrie in the ash, and more.
- The board now shows work near the land you hunt in, so a Meistari is no longer sent to cull necks.
- New drótt work: three trolls, the serpent, a lox herd and a stand in the ash.
- Elders' tales: seven short story lines told by the lodge's elders, three to five parts each, about Ullr and his hunters at Ýdalir. Ylfa's yew bow, Steinarr's old road, Fróði's carved bone, Skaði's road, the ring of Ullr, Bersi's bear shirt and Ullr's ten winters. Each tale ends with coin, Virðing, Megin and a gift: arrows, mead, a runestone or whetstones.
- Speak to an elder to hear their tale, or open the new Elders' tales tab on Máldagi. There is at least one tale for every rank.
- Daily work: eleven jobs that come back every day, and harder ones every three days for the higher ranks. Up to two at a time, beside your contracts.
- Some hunts ask for starred beasts only.
- If a gift item is not in your game, you get its worth in coins instead.
Himinbjörg, the tower at the edge of the sky.
- A stone arena tower now stands once in the world, far out in the meadows or the black forest, on dry, even ground away from shores and player builds.
- Ýdalir and Himinbjörg are both pinned on every map from the start, so every hunter can find the hall and the tower.
- Varðrún keeps the stair. Give her your name, then climb 200 floors by winning fights in the ring below.
- Most floors are waves of beasts from the lands your world has opened, harder the higher you climb. Every tenth floor a champion of the lodge waits for you instead.
- Each floor won pays coin, Virðing and Megin. Floors 10, 50, 100 and 200 give a title and runestones, and make the fee and the rest between fights smaller.
- Come to the tower before your Megin has woken and Varðrún turns you back. She can send you along the old road to Ýdalir and the trials, and marks the way on your map.
- Win the top floor and you may challenge for the high seat. Its holder fights for free and stands first on the tower's list, until someone takes it.
- Ask Varðrún for the highest hunters of your world.
- One bout at a time, a small fee, a rest after each fight and a time limit. Only your own blows count in the ring, and fleeing or falling loses the floor. The server judges every bout.
- Himinbjörg stays off until the server turns it on.
- Server and clients must run the same version of the add-on.
Lighter and steadier.
- The lodge, the tower and the hunters load lighter and use less memory, and their icons take a fraction of the space they did.
- Needs MidgardPlus 1.52.0.
0.2.3
Where Megin comes from.
Megin grew out of my love for Hunter x Hunter: the idea that power comes from within, that you shape it yourself, and that an oath you swear on it makes it stronger. I gave that idea a Norse home.
Megin is the Old Norse word for might, the strength in Thor's belt Megingjörð, and Ásmegin is the might of the gods themselves. Ullr, the god of the bow and the hunt, keeps his hall at Ýalir, the yew dales, and his hunters are the ones who wake your Megin. Your affinity is read at Mímir's well, where Odin gave an eye to drink from the well of wisdom under the world tree. The masterwork of a Meistari calls up the many hands of Starkaðr, the giant born with eight arms.
- The story of where Megin comes from is now told here and on the MidgardPlus website.
- Nothing in play changes in this version.
- Server and clients must run the same version of the add-on.
0.2.2
- Fixed: handing in a contract or answering a judge on your own world often said "Not yet. Wait a little." and the work had to be reported a second time.
- Fixed: a contract that ran late or failed could stall your other contracts for a moment on the host.
- Fixed: mastery gained in the last half minute was lost when your Megin level rose.
- Fixed: after leaving and rejoining a server, an older copy of your record could be written over a newer rank or power.
- Fixed: on a server that keeps the record, one refused power no longer wipes what you had sworn in that slot.
- Fixed: a coin refund over 999 now arrives in full, and contract pay no longer spills extra coins when your bag is nearly full.
- Contract progress is written to disk only when it changes.
- Server and clients must run the same version of the add-on.
0.2.1
- The lodge's warden and examiners now stand on real bodies, the same as yours, each with their own gear and their own place at Ýdalir.
- Hringvörðr keeps the ring stone in his hooded cloak with the ring staff. Steinarr waits by the lifting stones with a stone maul, Ylfa by the shooting mark with her bow, Fróði sits by the well under his rune staff, Hrafnkell stands at the contract board with a raven on his shoulder, Gunnvör before the door by the law stone, and Bersi at the long fire in a bear hood.
- They turn to you when you speak to them and watch you pass. They do not wander and cannot be hurt.
- A world that already has Ýdalir gets the new places and set pieces the next time it is started.
- Fixed: a sworn power stopped answering after a few casts with "The lodge has not approved that power here", and was forgotten when the game closed. Sworn powers now stay sworn.
- Fixed: Máldagi showed no offered or held work and the contract tracker stayed empty, while the lodge still said "Finish what you hold first". The board and the tracker now show your work, and held work is kept when the world restarts.
- A slot whose power was lost this way can be sworn again once at no fee.
- Server and clients must run the same version of the add-on.
0.2.0
- Megin now grows in five tiers, Neisti, Glóð, Logi, Bál and Ásmegin. The same power looks stronger at each one, and a hunter wears an aura in the colour of the affinity.
- Each sworn power gains its own mastery from use, in five ranks. Each rank gives a few percent of cost, cooldown or reach.
- Six Megin stances, learned in order at the lodge: Hlíf, Móðr, Hljóð, Sjón, Skjaldborg and Ofrefli.
- Two of your own powers cast close together can answer with a small combo.
- Fourteen more shapes can be sworn: Skin, Mist, Lance, Orb, Blades, Stake, Bulwark, Fetter, Shove, Mark, Hush, Echo, Thread and Foresight.
- A Meistari names a masterwork slot, and that slot can hold Hendr Starkaðar.
- New setting Lodge quests, which starts off. With it on, the Raunir become seven staged trials, each judged by its own elder at Ýdalir. Every stage can be passed in more than one way, rival candidates take the trials beside you, and a failed stage can be tried again after a wait.
- Máldagi, the contract board at Ýdalir: hunts, retrievals, exploration, escorts, defences and boss work, new every hour, in tiers that follow your rank and the world. Swear a heit on a contract (no food, by night, alone, deathless, swift, bare chested) for better pay. Drótt work is the same for everyone and shares credit with hunters who stand near.
- Virðing, your standing with the lodge, is earned from contracts. Drengr and Meistari now need it, and spend some of it.
- Five callings with their own contract lines, a small edge each, a title beside your name and up to three stars: Dýrbani, Haugbrjótr, Vargbani, Vegvísir and Þulr.
- The lodge's saga in seven named contracts, and the five ordeals of Járnviðr for a Drengr.
- The oath ring opens the lodge's maps: the warden marks the nearest trader, barrow, cave or camp for a few coins, more of them at higher ranks.
- With Lodge quests on, each Megin stance is taught through a training task on the board.
- Server and clients must run the same version of the add-on.
0.1.0
- First build: the hall of Ýdalir, the ring warden, the three trials, the oath ring, Megin, the omen at the well and hamskipti.
