This mod requires the following mods to function
denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim
BepInEx pack for Valheim. Preconfigured with the correct entry point for mods and preferred defaults for the community.
Preferred version: 5.4.2351README
Why Sleep Alone?
Why Sleep Alone? turns Valheim's Dragon Bed into a true shared bed for two players — and, as of 1.0.0, can also support compatible double beds from other mods when their prefab names are explicitly added to the configuration.
Sleep together, share the same home and respawn point, wake with Satisfied, and choose between atmospheric, romantic, cheeky or fully custom dream text.
Created by TheLionCid.
Version: 1.0.0
Valheim: 1.0.17
Framework: BepInEx 5.4.2351
What's New in 1.0.0
- Expanded narrative system with 80 shared-sleep dreams and 20 wake lines, available in English and Spanish.
- Stronger Viking/Norse identity across Neutral, Romantic and Bawdy writing.
BawdykeepsMildandSpicyintensity options.- Improved anti-repeat system: recent dreams and wake lines are kept out of the pool while alternatives remain.
- More conservative vanilla dream protection: Why Sleep Alone only replaces verified generic vanilla dream results.
- Boss, progression, special and cinematic dreams always keep priority.
- New
Customtext mode that loads your own dreams and wake lines from an external UTF-8 file. - Optional custom-text participation in
Mixedmode. - New
AdditionalDoubleBedsoption for compatible double beds from other mods. - Additional-bed configuration is synchronized from the host through the existing gameplay snapshot.
- Existing sleep/respawn position sliders are reused for custom beds.
- Existing multiplayer identity, occupancy, reward, cleanup and respawn systems remain in place.
Core Features
- Share the vanilla Dragon Bed (
piece_bed02) with one other player. - Two linked players can sleep in the same bed at the same time.
- Both linked players can use the same shared bed as their respawn point.
- Separate configurable sleep and respawn positions for Player A and Player B.
- Completing a valid shared night grants both players Satisfied.
Satisfiedcan improve Health, Stamina and Eitr regeneration.Satisfiedworks alongside vanilla Rested.- Neutral, Romantic, Bawdy, Mixed and Custom text modes.
- Romantic/Bawdy presentation can reuse short vanilla heart effects on wake.
- Uses Valheim runtime assets where appropriate; no external AssetBundle is required.
Additional Double Beds from Other Mods
The vanilla Dragon Bed is always supported automatically:
piece_bed02
You can explicitly add compatible beds from other mods in:
BepInEx/config/TheLionCid.WhySleepAlone.cfg
Example:
[Compatibility]
AdditionalDoubleBeds = FancyDoubleBed, OakMarriageBed, MyModdedBed
Use the exact prefab name, not the visible/localized item name.
Why Sleep Alone validates configured beds against the actual registered prefab and expects compatible Valheim bed components such as Bed, ZNetView and a usable spawn point. It does not automatically treat every object containing "bed" in its name as a shared bed.
The existing global Sleep A / Sleep B / Spawn A / Spawn B position controls are used for these beds, so players can adjust positioning to match the bed model.
Important compatibility note
I have not been able to test the custom-bed integration in live gameplay with third-party bed mods because we do not currently use custom bed mods in our own world. This feature was added by community request.
The implementation has logic/build coverage, but that is not the same as validating every third-party bed's geometry, animation setup or prefab structure in-game.
If you test a modded bed, compatibility feedback is very welcome. When reporting a problem, please include:
- the bed mod name and version;
- the exact prefab name you added;
- whether you are host or client;
- screenshots of player positioning if relevant;
- the BepInEx log from the affected player and, for multiplayer issues, the host as well.
All participating players still need the mod that provides the custom bed.
Custom Dreams & Wake Text
Version 1.0.0 adds a Custom text profile.
The mod uses:
BepInEx/config/WhySleepAlone_CustomText.txt
If the file does not exist, Why Sleep Alone creates a commented example without overwriting an existing file.
Format:
# Lines beginning with # are comments.
# One complete entry per line.
[Dreams]
You dream of the first house you built together...
Someone stole all the furs again. Suspicious.
[Wake]
You wake beside the reason you keep coming home.
The bed survived another night.
The file is UTF-8 and supports English, Spanish and other Unicode text.
To use only your own text:
[Text]
SharedSleepTone = Custom
To let custom entries occasionally appear in Mixed mode:
IncludeCustomInMixed = true
When enabled, custom text receives a 10% share of the relevant Mixed selection pool when valid custom entries are available.
Custom text is local presentation and is not synchronized over the network. This means two players may intentionally have different custom text files.
After editing the file, restart the game or reload the BepInEx configuration through a tool that invokes ConfigFile.Reload.
If the file is missing, empty or invalid, the mod falls back safely instead of breaking sleep.
Dream System & Vanilla Cinematics
Why Sleep Alone uses Valheim's native dream presentation rather than replacing it with a separate cinematic/UI system.
Version 1.0.0 is deliberately conservative:
- only verified generic vanilla dream results are eligible for replacement;
- boss/progression/special dreams remain vanilla;
- active or pending sleep cinematics retain priority;
- unknown or
nulldream results are preserved; - vanilla dream objects and progression flags are not modified;
- the mod does not reroll vanilla dreams just to force one of its own messages.
As a result, a Why Sleep Alone dream is not guaranteed to appear every shared night. Preserving Valheim's own narrative behavior takes priority.
Text & Mood Modes
Neutral
Quiet, mysterious and companion-focused, with stronger Norse/Valheim atmosphere.
Romantic
Affectionate without feeling modern: returning from raids, shared fires, runestones, voyages, home and remembrance.
Bawdy
Adult Viking tavern humor and suggestive shared-night text.
Two intensity levels are available:
MildSpicy
When Spicy is selected, the pool keeps some Mild lines for variety instead of making every line equally intense.
Mixed
Uses the built-in weighted blend:
- 45% Neutral
- 30% Romantic
- 20% Bawdy Mild
- 5% Bawdy Spicy
If IncludeCustomInMixed is enabled and valid custom entries exist, custom text is blended into the selection as described above.
Custom
Uses player-written entries from WhySleepAlone_CustomText.txt, with safe fallback if a category has no valid entries.
Anti-Repetition
The narrative system keeps a small local history to reduce repetition:
- up to the last 10 different dreams are excluded while alternatives exist;
- recent wake lines are also avoided;
- if a pool is too small, the restriction relaxes safely rather than blocking sleep.
The history is local and lightweight; it does not add network traffic.
Shared Bed & Respawn
A supported shared bed can be associated with two players:
- Player A: the vanilla owner;
- Player B: the linked partner.
The persistent shared-bed association is separate from temporary sleep occupancy.
Both linked players can use the same bed as their respawn point. If a linked bed becomes unavailable, the mod uses the existing safe cleanup/fallback behavior instead of creating a respawn loop.
Satisfied
When both linked players successfully complete a valid shared night, both can receive:
Satisfied
Default duration: 60 minutes
Default bonuses:
- +10% Health regeneration;
- +10% Stamina regeneration;
- +10% Eitr regeneration.
Each value can be configured individually.
Satisfied is separate from Rested and is designed to coexist with it.

For additional modded beds, the host's configured allowed-bed list is distributed through the existing gameplay snapshot. Clients cannot expand the host's allowed list locally.
Custom text files are intentionally local and are not synchronized.
If reporting a multiplayer problem, please include logs from both the affected client and the host whenever possible.
Compatibility
This release is prepared for:
- Valheim 1.0.17
- BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2351
Why Sleep Alone does not depend on a specific third-party double-bed mod.
Compatibility with an additional bed depends on how that mod implements its prefab. The custom-bed feature is intended for beds that use Valheim-compatible bed/network/spawn components.
A Valheim update that changes bed, sleep, respawn, networking, DreamText or cinematic APIs may require a Why Sleep Alone update.

BepInEx/config/TheLionCid.WhySleepAlone.cfg
Ejemplo:
[Compatibility]
AdditionalDoubleBeds = FancyDoubleBed, OakMarriageBed, MyModdedBed
[Text]
SharedSleepTone = Custom
IncludeCustomInMixed = true
- +10% regeneración de Vida;
- +10% regeneración de Aguante;
