README

Where Is My Queen? – queens, wax and the beekeeper's craft

Harvest your beehives as always. Now and then a young queen bee crawls out of the comb and drops with the honey, so a busy apiary slowly raises its own queens. Every harvest also gives beeswax. Wax, honey and spare queens become an early-game beekeeper set, a swarm pot to throw, honey arrows, a long-burning beeswax torch and six honey dishes from the Black Forest to the Mistlands.

Queen 1 in 30 for a full hive (4 honey), adjustable; 1 in 15 in the beekeeper set
Beeswax 2 per full hive, 1–2 from a wild hive
Beekeeper set hat with veil, smock, trousers: Black Forest tier, poison resistance, bees do not sting you
Weapons swarm pot (bomb), honey arrows (slow), beeswax torch (burns 3× as long, brighter)
Food six honey dishes, cauldron level 1 to 5

Finding a queen

  1. Let a beehive fill up as usual. It makes one honey every 20 minutes in the Meadows, Black Forest and Plains, up to 4.
  2. Take the honey with E (use). The hive rolls once for a queen.
  3. If she is there, she lies on top of the honey, and you read:

A young queen crawls from the comb Enough for a new hive

  • A full hive is best. The chance follows the honey you take: 4 honey has the full 1 in 30, 2 honey half of it, 1 honey a quarter. Emptying a hive every time it has one honey gives no more queens than waiting until it is full.
  • She is a real queen bee. She stacks with queens from wild hives and builds a beehive at the workbench like any other.
  • Only beehives. The bird nest works like a hive inside the game but gives feathers, so it never has a queen or wax.

Beeswax

Every harvest gives wax with the honey: 2 for a full hive, its share for less (one honey: a 50 % chance of one wax). A wild hive that you knock down drops 1–2 wax with its honey and queen. Wax goes into the beekeeper set and the beeswax torch.

The beekeeper set

Made at the workbench level 2, like the leather and troll leather sets. Each piece needs one queen bee: a spare queen's scent in the cloth is what keeps her bees calm.

Piece Cost Armour Weight
Beekeeper's hat (straw hat with a net veil) 2 deer hide, 6 leather scraps, 4 beeswax, 1 queen bee 4 (+2 per level) 1
Beekeeper's smock (linen with sleeves and cuffs) 5 deer hide, 4 leather scraps, 6 beeswax, 1 queen bee 4 (+2 per level) 4
Beekeeper's trousers (tucked into dark boots) 5 deer hide, 4 beeswax, 1 queen bee 4 (+2 per level) 4

Upgrades to level 4 cost more hide, scraps and wax (no further queens). Like vanilla armour of this tier, the refinement forge takes it further.

Set bonus "Beekeeper" (all three pieces):

  • Poison resistance (−50 % poison damage).
  • Bees do not sting you, neither at wild hives nor in a swarm pot's swarm.
  • Twice the chance of a queen when you harvest in the set (1 in 15 instead of 1 in 30).

The armour sits between leather (2) and troll leather (6). The set is about bees and poison, not about armour.

Weapons and tools

  • Swarm pot (workbench, 1 queen bee + 3 honey + 3 resin = 5 pots). Thrown like the ooze bomb. Where it breaks, the angry swarm stings everything within 3.5 m for 8 seconds: a little pierce damage every second and venom. Measured: about 90 damage to a troll that stands in it. A player in the whole beekeeper set is not stung.
  • Honey arrows (workbench level 2, 8 wood + 2 flint + 2 feathers + 2 honey = 20). Pierce 24, slightly less than flint arrows (27). What they hit is sticky with honey: 30 % slower for 6 seconds.
  • Beeswax torch (by hand, 1 wood + 1 beeswax). Burns 30 minutes instead of 10 and lights 15 m instead of 10, brighter and warmer. Otherwise a torch like any other.

Honey dishes

Each dish sits next to the vanilla dish of its cauldron level and costs some honey.

Dish Cauldron Cost Health Stamina Eitr Duration Next to (vanilla)
Honey-glazed carrots 1 3 carrots, 1 honey 15 50 25 min carrot soup 15/45
Honey-roast venison 1 1 cooked deer meat, 1 honey, 2 raspberries 42 16 25 min deer stew 45/15
Honey turnip mash 2 2 turnips, 1 carrot, 1 honey 20 60 25 min turnip stew 18/55
Honey-glazed wolf 3 1 wolf meat, 1 onion, 2 honey 62 24 30 min wolf skewer 65/21
Honey cake 4 3 barley flour, 2 cloudberries, 2 honey 28 88 30 min blood pudding 25/75, fish 'n' bread 30/90
Royal honey 5 3 honey, 2 royal jelly, 1 sap 24 24 75 25 min yggdrasil porridge 27/13/80

The real thing

Queens. A strong bee colony raises new queens when its hive gets crowded. Workers build a few queen cells on the comb, and the old queen leaves with half the bees as a swarm. A beekeeper who finds such a cell takes it, with a frame of bees, to start a new colony. That is why the chance in this mod grows with how full the hive is, and why a beekeeper who works the comb calmly in veil and smock finds more of them.

Wax. To get at the honey, the beekeeper cuts off the wax cappings that seal each cell. Those cappings are the purest wax of the hive, and they come with every harvest. Beeswax burns brighter and longer than resin or tallow, which is why church candles were made of it. Waxed linen sheds rain and stings.

Veil and smock. Beekeepers have worn hats with a dark net veil for centuries: dark net is easier to see through than light, and bees go for dark, furry things, so the rest of the suit is pale and smooth. Sleeves are closed at the wrists and trousers tucked into boots so no bee crawls in.

Swarm pots. Beehives and wasp nests were thrown at enemies from antiquity on: over town walls, into siege tunnels and onto ships.

Vanilla beehive (Beehive, measured in game): one honey every 1200 s, at most 4. One game day is 1800 s, so a hive is full after about 80 minutes, or 2.7 days. It only works in the Meadows, Black Forest and Plains, and only with enough open space around it.

How long until a queen at 1 in 30 (full hives, harvested when full):

Full harvests At least one queen
10 29 %
21 50 %
30 64 %
68 90 %
Beehives One queen on average every In the beekeeper set
1 40 hours of play 20 hours
5 8 hours of play 4 hours
10 4 hours of play 2 hours

Configuration

BepInEx/config/zap.whereismyqueen.cfg

Queens (server-synced, admin only):

  • ChanceOneIn (30): a full hive gives a queen with a chance of 1 in this number. 1 gives a queen with every full hive, 0 turns queens off.
  • ScaleWithHoney (on): a hive that is only partly full has a smaller chance in proportion to its honey. Off: every harvest has the full chance, however little honey it gives.
  • BeekeeperSetBonus (2): in the whole set the chance is this many times higher.

Beeswax (admin): WaxPerFullHive (2), WildHiveWaxMin (1), WildHiveWaxMax (2).

Beekeeper (admin): CalmBees (on): bees do not sting a player in the whole set.

Recipes (admin): one entry per item, as Item:amount, comma separated. For armour Item:amount+perLevel adds that much per upgrade, e.g. DeerHide:5+3,WIMQ_Beeswax:6+3,QueenBee:1.

Client: ShowMessage (on): the message in the middle of the screen when you find a queen.

Multiplayer and compatibility

  • The player whose game runs the hive rolls, once per harvest, just as that game drops the honey. Everyone sees the same queen and wax on the ground, and only the player who harvested gets the message, in their own language. The set bonus counts for the player who harvests, whoever owns the hive.
  • The world setting for resources (more or fewer drops) scales the queen and the wax like the honey.
  • Every player and the server need the mod. Requires Jötunn.
  • The vanilla beehive, honey and queen are not changed. The new items are new prefabs (WIMQ_…): if you remove the mod, they disappear from inventories and chests.

Deutsch
