Fylgja

Valheim has no way to find your way to a map pin. Fylgja fixes that without putting a compass on your screen.

In Norse belief a fylgja is a guiding spirit that follows a person. Here it is a small flame that floats ahead of you and sheds embers in the direction you need to go. Far away, a thin pillar of light with a star on top stands over the pin, so you can see where it is from across the map.

This mod is client side. Install it only on your own computer. It works on any server and in single player, and the server and other players do not need it.

How to use

Open the map and click a pin while holding a key:

• Shift + left click tracks the pin and keeps it. When you arrive, the light goes out quietly and the pin stays marked. It lights up again if you walk far away.
• Ctrl + left click tracks the pin for one trip. When you arrive, you get a short message and the pin is released.
• Click a tracked pin again with Ctrl or Shift to stop tracking it.
• F7 hides or shows all guidance. Your tracked pins are kept.

The game's own click behavior (striking a pin through, opening the new pin dialog) is blocked while Ctrl or Shift is held, so selecting a pin does not change anything else on your map.

Several pins at once

You can track up to 5 pins at the same time (change it in the config, up to 12). The spirit always leads you to the nearest one. Every pin gets its own muted color and an Elder Futhark rune, which is shown on the star, on the map and on the minimap. That way you can tell pins apart even if you have fifty with the same icon.

Details

• Tracked pins are remembered. They are stored in your character's save data, separately for each world, and come back when you log in again. If you delete a pin from the map, it is forgotten too.
• The pillar is real and has no height limit. It does not get cut off by distance, fog or unloaded terrain.
• The star stays faintly visible through walls, hills and trees, so you never lose the direction.
• In bright daylight the star and runes become larger and denser, and the effect fades in the dark, in storms and in fog.
• Messages are in English and Russian, depending on your game language.

Configuration

Settings are in BepInEx/config/com.awuushy.valheim.fylgja.cfg after the first launch. You can change the toggle key, what happens on arrival for Ctrl and Shift, the arrival radius, the number of pins, the colors, the size and look of the star, and the spirit. Every option has a short description in the file.

Compatibility

Fylgja only reads your map pins and draws on your own screen. It does not change the world, items or network traffic. It should work next to other map mods, but a mod that also uses Ctrl or Shift clicks on the map may conflict.
