README
Description
Fillet fish from the normal inventory crafting menu while carrying an eligible tool. Customize fumbles, Cooking XP, yield and crafting actions, with optional species-specific fillets for use in other mods' recipes. During online play, gameplay settings and fillet item data are synced from the server and locked; tooltips, icons and effects stay local.
Overview
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Inventory filleting | Craft Raw Fish alongside the hammer and torch after discovering fish and carrying a suitable tool. |
| Configurable tools | Choose eligible weapons/tools by skill category; daggers are the default. |
| Optional hand mechanics | Configure fumbles, Cooking skill balancing, XP, yield reduction and crafting actions. |
| Optional unique fillets | Add species fillets to hand crafting and the preparation table, with cooking-station support. |
| Item customization | Edit fillet names, descriptions, weights, models and cooked outputs through YAML; add local PNG icons. |
| Multiplayer | The server controls gameplay settings and item data; matching versions are required. |
Configuration and values
Edit BepInEx/config/dannanboi.fieldfilleting.cfg. Valid config and YAML changes reload automatically. Offline play uses your local values; multiplayer uses the server's [Settings], [Action Rules] and fillet YAML without overwriting client preferences. [UI] options remain local and editable.
Filleting tools
[Settings] option; default: daggers. Accepts comma-separated skill categories, for example daggers, axes. daggers and knives both select the Knives skill. Names are case-insensitive. A matching weapon/tool must be carried; it need not be equipped and is not consumed or damaged. Ammunition, food and armor do not qualify. Blank disables hand filleting; unknown categories reject the edit.
Recipes stay hidden until their fish is discovered. Hand recipe notifications wait until an eligible tool is carried; preparation-table species notifications require fish discovery alone. Removing the last eligible tool during hand crafting always cancels the attempt.
Hand-filleting settings
These [Settings] options apply to hand filleting:
| Option | Default | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Fumble chance | 0.25 |
25% base risk. 0.01 = 1%, 1 = 100%; 0 disables fumbles. |
| Fumble message | You fumbled the filleting and ruined the fish. |
Yellow center-screen message; blank hides it. |
| Skill balancing | true |
Reduce fumble risk using Cooking skill. |
| Balancing multiplier | 1 |
Range 0–10; default halves risk at skill 50 and removes it at 100. |
| Cooking skill gain | true |
Award Cooking XP after successful filleting. |
| Cooking skill base value | 1 |
Native skill-gain amount per successful recipe execution; range 0.1–40. |
| Cooking skill multiplier | 1 |
Multiply the base XP amount; range 1–10. |
| Fish yield reduction | 0 |
0 disables; 0.01–0.99 removes 1–99% of the vanilla yield. |
With skill balancing enabled, effective risk = Fumble chance × max(0, 1 − Cooking skill / 100 × Balancing multiplier). A fumble consumes the fish and gives no fillets or XP. Multi-craft batches share one fumble roll; XP scales with successful recipe executions, not output fillets. Base XP uses the game's Cooking progression curve and applicable XP modifiers; 1 is not a whole skill level.
Yield reduction rounds up per fish and never produces fewer than one fillet. For example, 0.5 halves a vanilla yield of 4 to 2, or a yield of 3 to 2.
Action Rules
[Action Rules] contains two booleans, both defaulting to true. Action animation sheathes held items, then plays the workbench crafting animation without resetting movement or jump momentum. Movement or jumping cancels; turning in place is allowed.
Cancel on movement also enables cancellation without animation. It is always applied while Action animation is enabled. With both false, movement is allowed without animation. Tool removal still cancels in every case. Cancelled attempts consume no fish and award no XP.
Unique fillets
[Settings] option; default: true. Adds species-specific raw-fish items and recipes in hand crafting and at the preparation table. Original Raw Fish recipes remain available. Table recipes use native station requirements, yields and XP, with no tool requirement or custom hand-filleting mechanics.
Items use dbff_RawFish_<fish prefab>, for example dbff_RawFish_Fish1 for perch. See FilletPrefabs.md for the vanilla IDs. Other mods can reference them in recipes; existing vanilla recipes are not automatically changed to accept them.
The cooking station and iron cooking station accept unique fillets with normal Raw Fish cooking behavior. Blank cooked-output fields produce ordinary Cooked fish. Disabling Unique fillets hides the added recipes while keeping existing items registered and cookable.
Fillet item YAML
Edit BepInEx/config/FieldFilleting/FilletItems.yaml. In multiplayer, edit the server/host's file. Valid saves update crafting previews, inventory item data and tooltips while playing; invalid edits keep the last valid values.
- Prefabname: dbff_RawFish_Fish1
PrefabnameCooked:
useModel: FishRaw
Title: "$animal_fish1 Fillet"
Description: "A fillet of perch. White fish."
WeightPerUnit: 0.5
Prefabname selects an existing fillet; it does not rename or create one. PrefabnameCooked selects an existing cooking output; it does not create a cooked prefab. useModel selects an existing item's visual model without changing fillet identity, physics, text or weight. Missing outputs or models fall back to Raw Fish's defaults.
Empty or omitted optional fields use these defaults:
| Empty field | Default |
|---|---|
| Prefabname | Required; an empty value rejects the reload. |
| PrefabnameCooked | Native Raw Fish cooked output, normally FishCooked. |
| useModel | FishRaw model. |
| Title | Localized Raw fish name with the species in parentheses. |
| Description | Native Raw Fish description. |
| WeightPerUnit | Native Raw Fish weight. |
Titles and descriptions accept literal text or game localization tokens. Weight is per unit; use a decimal point and a non-negative number, including 0. New YAML gives perch and pike weight 0.5, and other vanilla fillets weight 1. Keep the flat list and two-space indentation; quote text containing : or #.
Fillet icons
Place PNGs in BepInEx/config/FieldFilleting/icons. Match the filename exactly to the prefab, for example dbff_RawFish_Fish1.png. Changes reload automatically; absent icons use Raw Fish's icon. Icons are local and are not synced.
Tooltips and effects
Local [UI] option Add to tooltip defaults to true. Tooltip text controls the hint appended to every eligible filleting tool; blank adds nothing. Example values, without extra quotation marks:
Add to tooltip = true
Tooltip text = Can be used to fillet fish
Visual Effect offers Every craft, Fumbles only and Off; default: Fumbles only. It plays blood spatter and a wet splat sound at the hands after completed hand filleting. Disable sound SFX defaults to false; true mutes only the paired sound. Cancelled attempts and preparation-table crafts trigger no effect.
Existing YAML and config values are preserved on upgrade. Use Config.example.cfg and FilletItems.example.yaml to apply these defaults to an existing installation.
Manual Installation

Compatibility
Requires BepInEx 5 for Valheim. Uses the native crafting UI and cooking stations. Mods replacing recipe, crafting, item or tooltip behavior may conflict. Server and clients must run the same version for multiplayer features. Without compatible server settings, added hand and unique preparation-table recipes remain unavailable. All players need the mod to load unique items; remove or convert saved unique fillets before uninstalling.
dannanboi Mod Philosophy
My mods aim to be small and modular, stay close to Valheim's vanilla experience, and work well together or independently. Enable all features to make bigger changes, or choose the ones that suit your playstyle. Your run should be yours to customize. Features described as "an added bonus" or "nice to have" should always be optional. In multiplayer, the server controls gameplay settings, while visual settings stay local to each player.
