README

Odin's Favor

Make your other mods part of the progression. Lock any installed mod until the player has earned it — beat a boss, survive 30 days, reach a skill level, find iron, discover the Mistlands. No coding, no editing GUIDs.

Want bigger inventory only after The Elder? Eternal torches only after Eikthyr? Planting anything only after 30 days? Pick it from a dropdown, done.

  • Works with mods you already have — nothing needs to support Odin's Favor.
  • Every mod starts as AlwaysOn, so installing Odin's Favor changes nothing until you choose.
  • Mods switch on the moment you earn them, with an on-screen message. No restart.
  • Client-side: install it on each player's game, not on the dedicated server (see Multiplayer).

How to use

  1. Install Odin's Favor alongside your other mods.
  2. Install Official BepInEx ConfigurationManager so you can change settings in game with F1 (recommended).
  3. Start the game. At the main menu press F1 → Odin's Favor → 2 - Mods, and pick when each mod turns on.
  4. Load your world. Locked mods stay off until you earn them.

Prefer files? Edit BepInEx/config/giridhar.odinsfavor.cfg (it appears after the first start):

[2 - Mods]
TorchesEternal = Eikthyr
Extra Slots = TheElder
PlantEverything = Custom

[4 - Custom rules]
PlantEverything = days:30

Choices: AlwaysOn, Eikthyr, TheElder, Bonemass, Moder, Yagluth, TheQueen, Fader, Custom

Tip: set your locks at the main menu or before starting the game. A mod that is locked from the start stays completely off until earned.

Custom rules

Choose Custom for a mod and write its rule in 4 - Custom rules:

Rule Unlocks when
boss:bonemass Bonemass is defeated (eikthyr, elder, bonemass, moder, yagluth, queen, fader)
days:30 the world reaches day 30
skill:woodcutting:50 your Woodcutting skill reaches 50
item:Iron you have picked up Iron at least once
biome:Mistlands you have discovered the Mistlands
kills:Greyling:100 you have killed 100 Greylings
key:defeated_eikthyr any world key is set (handy for servers and other mods)

Combine rules with and / or and group them with brackets:

Extra Slots = boss:bonemass and (days:50 or skill:run:50)
  • Items and creatures use their spawn names, the same as the spawn command (Iron, Blueberries, Greyling, Troll).
  • Skills: Swords, Knives, Clubs, Polearms, Spears, Blocking, Axes, Bows, Crossbows, ElementalMagic, BloodMagic, Unarmed, Pickaxes, WoodCutting, Jump, Sneak, Run, Swim, Fishing, Cooking, Farming, Crafting, Dodge, Ride.
  • Biomes: Meadows, BlackForest, Swamp, Mountain, Plains, Mistlands, AshLands, DeepNorth, Ocean.
  • Rules you type in F1 take effect a couple of seconds after you stop typing.
  • A typo never locks you out. It's shown on screen and in the log, and the mod keeps its previous rule (or stays on if it had none) until you fix it.

Unlock messages

Each mod can announce itself in 3 - Messages:

[3 - Messages]
TorchesEternal = The thunder of {boss} lights the dark|Your torches now burn forever
PlantEverything = {condition}|The forest answers your call
  • {mod} = the mod's name, {boss} = the boss, {condition} = the rule in plain words (e.g. "Day 30")
  • | starts a second line
  • Leave it empty for the built-in line, e.g. "The thunder of Eikthyr awakens TorchesEternal" or "Proven worthy: Day 30 — PlantEverything awakens"
  • When several mods unlock at once, the messages are shown one after another.

What works and what doesn't

Odin's Favor pauses a mod's hooks into the game until it is earned, then switches them back on and catches the mod up on anything it missed while the world was loading.

Tested and working

Tested on Valheim 1.0.20 with BepInEx 5.4.23, unlocking through all seven bosses and custom rules:

Mod Result
AzuClock ✅ Clock appears the moment it unlocks
AzuAreaRepair ✅
AzuAutoStore ✅ Chests start pulling items in
XPortal ✅ Portal destination list appears
Speedy Paths ✅
Quick Stack - Store - Sort - Trash - Restock ✅ Buttons appear with proper text
Eternal Fire ✅
Instaloot ✅
TorchesEternal ✅
Extra Slots ✅ Extra equipment slots appear
PlantEverything ✅ New plants appear in the cultivator
Seasonality ⚠️ Works, but the season repaints the world gradually as you move around rather than all at once

Good candidates

Mods that change how the game behaves: building rules, stamina, carry weight, teleporting, automation, crafting from chests, HUD additions, quality-of-life tweaks.

Don't lock these

  • Libraries and helpers — Jötunn, YamlDotNet, ServerSync, Configuration Manager and anything with "Lib", "API", "Detector" or "Sync" in the name. Other mods need them running.
  • Big content mods built on Jötunn (new creatures, biomes, dungeons) — they register their content in ways Odin's Favor can't pause cleanly. To gate individual items or recipes, use World Advancement Progression instead.

Known limits

  • Locking a mod again after it has run. Unlocking is instant, but locking again (changing its setting mid-game, removekey, or switching to a world where the boss is still alive) can't remove buttons, hotkeys or visuals the mod already created. You'll see a message asking you to restart the game to lock it fully. In normal play this never happens — bosses don't un-die.
  • Inventory mods (Extra Slots and similar): don't lock them again while items are in their extra slots.
  • Looks that are already applied stay. If a visual mod like Seasonality ran before you locked it, its look stays until you restart.
  • A short stutter is possible when a mod that touches every plant or object unlocks in a big, built-up world, as Odin's Favor catches it up.
  • Skill rules are checked fresh each time you load. Once earned, a mod stays on for the rest of that session even if a skill drops after dying, but if the skill is below the target next time you load in, the mod starts locked again. (Saving unlocks per character is planned.)

Multiplayer

Odin's Favor is client-side. Each player installs it in their own game.

  • Don't install it on a dedicated server (yet). A server has no player of its own, so rules like skill: or item: would never be met there, and any mod it locks on the server would stay locked. It's also untested on servers.
  • Boss kills and days come from the server's world, so those unlock for everyone at the same moment. Skills, items, biomes and kills are each player's own.
  • Share one settings file. Everyone should use the same BepInEx/config/giridhar.odinsfavor.cfg, otherwise a mod might unlock after Eikthyr for one player and after Bonemass for another.
  • It's an honour system for now. Any player can set a mod to AlwaysOn in their own F1. Server-enforced settings are planned — then the server owner sets the rules once and they apply to everyone who joins.
  • Players without Odin's Favor can still join and play; it doesn't check versions.
  • Mods with built-in server sync keep their version checks running while locked, so joining servers that require them should still work (not yet tested on a live server).

Trying it out

Turn on cheats in the console (F5) with devcommands, then:

  • setkey defeated_eikthyr — counts Eikthyr as defeated (defeated_gdking The Elder, defeated_bonemass, defeated_dragon Moder, defeated_goblinking Yagluth, defeated_queen, defeated_fader)
  • skiptime 54000 — jumps ahead 30 days (a day is 1800)
  • raiseskill woodcutting 50 — for skill rules
  • spawn Iron, then pick it up — for item rules
  • resetkeys — clears all boss kills

An earned mod stays on until you load another world or character. To lock it again, clear the key, quit to the menu and load the world again.

Problems?

If a locked mod misbehaves, set it back to AlwaysOn. Please report it with the mod's name and your BepInEx/LogOutput.log — search it for Odin's Favor to see exactly what was locked, unlocked and caught up.
