README

Spyglass

A craftable brass spyglass. Hold it, raise it to your eye, and look at what's far away.

  • Look through it. Hold Block (right mouse, or the left trigger) with the spyglass in your hand. The view narrows to a round lens, the fog thins, and distant things keep their detail further out.
  • Zoom. Turn the mouse wheel (or use the bumpers on a controller). It starts at 4x and goes up to 10x.
  • Ping what you see. Press the middle mouse button (or the right trigger) while looking through it: a ping appears on the map, for everyone, exactly like a ping from the map screen. It reaches up to 1000 metres by default (a setting), even past where the game has loaded the ground.
  • Use it anywhere you can sit. It works standing, sitting on a chair, at the helm of a ship, holding on at the mast or the bow, and on a longship's seats. It never gets in the way of the wheel's own controls, and moving or jumping still gets you up as usual.
  • It wears. The lens clouds over and a crack spreads as you look through it. When it's worn out you can't look through it until you mend it at a forge.
  • Other players see it. With the mod, other players see you raise it to your eye and hear the click of raising, lowering and zooming when you are near them.
  • It hangs properly on your back, in your hand, and on item stands (wall stand and table stand).

Crafting

At a forge (level 1): 2 Fine Wood, 2 Bronze, 4 Resin. A server owner can change the cost and the station in the server's config.

Controls

Keyboard and mouse Controller
Raise the spyglass Hold Block (right mouse) Hold the Block trigger (left trigger)
Zoom Mouse wheel Right bumper in, left bumper out
Ping Middle mouse button Attack trigger (right trigger)

While the spyglass is in your hand, attacking and blocking do nothing, so raising it never swings or blocks. On a controller, the left bumper's Run and Hide buttons are switched off while it's raised.

Settings

Everything is in the F1 Configuration Manager. Tick Advanced settings to see the sound and pose sections.

Section What's in it
1 - Looking Starting and highest magnification, wheel step, look from your eyes (on by default), raise your arm, show wear on the lens, far sight, clear air
2 - Pinging The ping key (middle mouse by default; None turns it off), how far it reaches, the delay between pings
3 - Other players See other players raise theirs, hear them, and how near they must be
4 - Crafting The cost and the station (the server decides these)
5 - Wear How much wear it takes and how fast looking uses it up (the server decides these)
6 - Sounds (advanced) Volume and the game sound effects used for raising, lowering, zooming and breaking
7 - Pose (advanced) Where the hand and elbow sit while looking, for tuning

Playing on a server

  • The server needs the mod for the spyglass to be craftable and kept: a server without it would delete the item. A player who has the mod on a server that doesn't simply doesn't get the recipe.
  • The ping uses the game's own ping, so it works for everyone on the server whether or not they have the mod.
  • Raising it and its sounds are shared as one small value on your character. A server without the mod passes it along and nothing else happens.
  • Players without the mod don't see it raised and don't hear it.

Other mods and known clashes

  • Another mod, Advize's Spyglass, also adds a spyglass. They are separate items with their own names, so both can be installed, but I haven't tested them together: use one at a time.
  • It changes the camera's field of view, the mouse wheel and the player's attack and block inputs while it is raised, as any zoom mod must. If another mod does the same job at the same moment, one of them wins.
