Weapon Oils
Weapon oils (blade oil, weapon coating), like meads for your blade: 12 oils imbue a melee weapon or bare fists with fire, frost, poison, lightning, life steal and more. Brewed at the cauldron, matured in an oil press. Glowing, animated.

Weapon Oils
Oils that coat a melee weapon for a while, the way meads work on you. Brew a base at the cauldron, let it mature in an oil press, then rub the oil on your blade (or your bare fists) for twenty minutes of fire, frost, poison, lightning and more.

- Twelve oils, at least one for every biome. Each is made from what its own biome gives you, and opens up once the boss before that biome has fallen.
- They stay worth using. Every oil's bonus is a share of your weapon's own damage, so a cheap early oil still pulls its weight with an end-game weapon. Later oils are stronger, and each is chosen to work against the creatures where you make it.
- Brewed like mead. Cook an oil base at the cauldron, put it in an oil press, and twenty minutes later tap four finished oils.
- Rub it on. Use an oil with a melee weapon in your hand: your character holds the weapon out and draws a hand along the blade. Every kind of melee weapon has its own way: a blade in each hand is crossed and stropped, a greatsword is held up in a guard, a battleaxe, atgeir or sledge is shifted in the grip so the hand reaches its head. The weapon then glows and sheds particles in the oil's colour, in your hand, on your back and on the ground.
- Or on your fists. Use an oil with no weapon in hand and you rub it into your palms: your punches carry it, both hands glow, and its icon and time left show at the top right like a mead's. Claws (fist weapons) are rubbed the same way.
- See what's oiled at a glance. An oiled weapon shows a small drop in the oil's colour in your bag and on your hotbar, and its tooltip names the oil and the minutes left.
- Nothing is wasted. A weapon that is already oiled refuses a second oil until the first wears off (a server setting allows replacing), and upgrading an oiled weapon keeps its oil.
- Made to fit the game. Hand-made bottles of smoky glass with a cork, a leather band and a charm on a cord for their biome; mortars of paste for the bases; a screw press built on the game's own storage barrel.

The oils
| Biome | Oil | What it does | Opens after |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meadows | Ember | Fire damage (+20%) | from the start |
| Meadows | Keen | Sharper: more physical damage (+12%) | from the start |
| Black Forest | Troll Fat | Swings cost less stamina (-25%) | Eikthyr |
| Black Forest | Barkhide | The weapon wears slower (-60%); axes and pickaxes chop and mine harder (+30%) | Eikthyr |
| Swamp | Venom | Poison damage (+35%) | The Elder |
| Swamp | Leech | Part of the damage you deal heals you (6%) | The Elder |
| Mountain | Rime | Frost damage (+35%), and what you hit is chilled and slowed | Bonemass |
| Plains | Storm | Lightning damage (+40%) | Moder |
| Plains | Lox Fat | Blows stagger harder (+50%) | Moder |
| Mistlands | Wisp | Added damage that no armour or resistance turns aside (+45%) | Yagluth |
| Mistlands | Royal | Whatever you block with, shield or weapon, blocks harder (+40%) | Yagluth |
| Ashlands | Cinder | Fire damage (+40%) and spirit damage that burns the dead (+40%) | The Queen |
The percentages are a share of the weapon's own damage (or of what it already does), so they grow with your weapons. A server can scale them all at once.
An oil lasts 20 minutes of world time by default. It keeps running while you're logged out, as the game's clock does. Oil on your bare hands is lost when you die, like your food; a weapon keeps its oil in your tombstone.
Making them
- Build an oil press with the hammer, near a workbench: 25 Wood, 10 Stone, 8 Resin, 4 Leather Scraps.
- Cook an oil base at the cauldron. Later oils need a cauldron with more of its extensions.
- Put the base in the press. After 20 minutes, tap it for 4 oils.
| Oil base | Cost | Cauldron level |
|---|---|---|
| Ember | 8 Resin, 4 Honey, 3 Dandelion | 1 |
| Keen | 6 Flint, 5 Resin, 4 Feathers | 1 |
| Troll Fat | 2 Troll Hide, 6 Resin, 4 Thistle | 1 |
| Barkhide | 10 Core Wood, 6 Resin, 4 Greydwarf Eye | 1 |
| Venom | 6 Ooze, 3 Guck, 4 Entrails | 2 |
| Leech | 6 Bloodbag, 4 Entrails, 3 Turnip | 2 |
| Rime | 4 Freeze Gland, 4 Onion, 4 Resin, 1 Crystal | 3 |
| Storm | 4 Needle, 4 Tar, 6 Barley | 4 |
| Lox Fat | 3 Lox Meat, 3 Tar, 6 Cloudberries | 4 |
| Wisp | 2 Wisp, 6 Sap, 4 Jotun Puffs | 5 |
| Royal | 4 Royal Jelly, 6 Sap, 2 Carapace | 5 |
| Cinder | 6 Sulfur, 6 Charred Bone, 1 Molten Core | 6 |
Every cost, the press's cost and station, and the press's time and yield can be changed by the server.

Using them
- On a weapon: hold the melee weapon and use the oil from your bag or hotbar.
- On your fists: put your weapons away, then use the oil.
- The oiling animation stops at once if you attack, and can be turned off or sped up in the settings.
- When an oil wears off you're told on screen.

Settings
Everything is in the F1 Configuration Manager. Tick Advanced settings to see the sound section.
| Section | What's in it |
|---|---|
| 1 - Oils | How long an oil lasts, a strength scale for every oil, whether a boss kill opens each biome's recipes, whether a new oil may replace one already on, Rime's chill time and slow (the server decides these) |
| 2 - Oil press | The press's cost and station, how long a base matures, how many oils one base makes (the server decides these) |
| 3 - Oil recipes | What each oil base costs at the cauldron (the server decides these) |
| 4 - Looks | The effect on oiled weapons and how strong it is, the oiling animation and its speed (your own) |
| 5 - Sounds (for tuning) (advanced) | The sound of oiling, its volume and pitch (your own) |
Playing on a server
- The server needs the mod: the oils, bases and press are new items and a new piece, and a server without them would delete them. Everyone playing needs it too.
- The server's settings (the oils, the press and the recipes) are sent to everyone who joins, so all players brew and fight by the same numbers.
- Other players with the mod see your oiled weapons and hands glow and see you oil them.
- Tested in single player. It is made for multiplayer (the settings come from the server, the glow and the animations are sent to other players), but it hasn't been tried on a dedicated server or with other players yet: reports are welcome.
Other mods and known clashes
- It adds to a weapon's damage, a swing's stamina cost and a block's power through the game's own methods, so it works with other mods that change those, and the effects add up. I haven't tested it alongside Epic Loot or the big combat overhauls.
- The oil press is built on the game's fermenter: a mod that changes how every fermenter works changes the press too.
