00. MidgardPlus Launcher

Updated 3 weeks ago

The easy way to run MidgardPlus, and to mod Valheim in general. A free Windows app that finds your Valheim folder, installs BepInEx, Jotunn and the full MidgardPlus mod in one click, and gives every setting a real control instead of a text file.

Download the launcher (Windows)

Or from the site: midgardplus.odinthered.dev

Thunderstore hosts mods, not desktop programs, so the launcher lives on the MidgardPlus site. It always installs the newest MidgardPlus from this page, so the two never drift apart.

Already have the launcher? Download it once more

From version 1.2.4 the launcher updates itself: when a new one is out, a gold Update launcher button appears at the top of the window, and one click downloads it, checks it against the published checksum and restarts. Launchers before 1.2.4 cannot do that, so they need replacing by hand one last time.

  1. Check your title bar. "MidgardPlus Launcher by Odin the Red", with no number, is an old one. "MidgardPlus Launcher 1.2.4 by Odin the Red" (or higher) is already set.
  2. Download the launcher and run it.
  3. If the old one was in your Start menu, the new one replaces it there as well, so your usual icon opens the new version. Nothing else to do.

What it does

  • Installs everything MidgardPlus needs: BepInEx, Jotunn and the mod, straight into your Valheim folder. No mod manager, no copying DLLs by hand.
  • Updates itself, and your other mods. One click for a new launcher; an Update to x.y.z button on every mod it installed, and Update all when there are several. It waits for you to close Valheim first, so nothing is replaced halfway.
  • Every setting gets a proper control, with the explanation next to it. Search all 47 settings, try a preset (Relaxed, Builder, Harder world, Two of you, Long days) without losing your own tuning, and reset to vanilla in one click.
  • Install other mods in one click. Search Thunderstore from inside the launcher and press Install. It brings in what the mod needs, and tells you before you click if it overlaps something MidgardPlus already does, is deprecated, or has not been updated for Valheim 1.0.
  • Checks what you already have. Mods already in your plugins folder are checked for overlap too, so you can see why two mods might be fighting.
  • Hands your rules to a server. Export your settings to a file and copy it to your dedicated server; the server's file is the one that counts.
  • Keeps your settings safe. Updating never overwrites your config, it backs up before it writes, and it asks before closing if you have not saved.

Is it safe?

The launcher is not code-signed yet, so Windows shows an "unknown publisher" warning the first time. Choose More info, then Run anyway. To check you got the file I published, compare its SHA-256 with SHA256SUMS.txt:

Get-FileHash .\MidgardPlusLauncher.exe -Algorithm SHA256

It only writes inside your Valheim folder and its own folder in %LOCALAPPDATA%, needs no admin rights, and uninstalls cleanly while keeping your settings.

Prefer a mod manager?

That works too. r2modman, Thunderstore Mod Manager and Gale all install MidgardPlus from this page. The launcher is for people who would rather have one window than a text file.
