PortalPicker
Portals without pairs and without saved destinations. Look at any portal and pick where to go.
How it plays
- Look at a portal. A wheel of every other portal in the world appears around the crosshair: the chosen one sits right of the crosshair, its neighbours above and below get smaller and fainter, five are visible at a time. Each shows its icon, name, distance and owner; the favourite of this portal carries a gold star.
- Mouse wheel turns the wheel (on a gamepad: d-pad left/right). While the wheel is shown the mouse wheel does not zoom the camera.
- E (use) takes you to the chosen portal, with the same rules as the game: no ore or metal (unless the portal allows everything), no travel while a summoned boss is alive if the world says so.
- Shift + E opens the portal window: name, owner, icon, colour and this portal's favourite. Eight recent icons are one click away, "..." opens all icons of the game (map marks, trophies, gear, food, resources, buildings) with search by name. Colour: nine quick colours, or any colour from your own palette (a square, a hue strip, the colour code and your ten recent colours); once you pick one there, the palette button takes that colour.
- Your portals come first, then public ones, then other players' portals grouped by owner, alphabetically inside each group.
- Which portal the wheel starts on: the favourite of this portal; without one, the portal you last went to from here; from a portal you have never used, the one you came from, so going back is a single press.
- Walking into a portal does nothing, and portals with the same name are no longer paired: a portal stores nothing about where it leads.
Favourite portal and memory
Every portal can have its own favourite: in the portal window pick any other portal from the list, and the wheel at this portal starts on it. Each portal also remembers where you last went from it. Both are kept in your character, separately for each world, and are yours only: other players see nothing of them and have their own. Under someone else's ward the portal window opens too, but only the favourite can be changed there.
Owners
Whoever builds a portal owns it (the game already remembers who built each piece, so old portals have owners too). Anyone who may edit the portal (like renaming it) can hand it over to another player in the portal window, or make it public with no owner: then it says "public" instead of a name. The server remembers players' names, and learns the names of those who have not joined lately from their beds, wards and tombstones, so the owner's name shows even while they are away.
Map
Every portal is marked on the map with its own icon, colour and name; point at a mark to see who owns it. A small orange swirl in the corner tells a portal mark from marks you placed yourself. With ParchmentMap the marks live on the parchment: a portal (or its new name or icon) appears on your parchment after you use a cartography table, and only where the parchment already shows the land.
Server and players
Everyone needs the mod: the server and every player. Only the server knows every portal in the world (the game sends players just the ones nearby), so the server keeps the list and sends it to the players when a portal is built, renamed, changed or destroyed. Jotunn does not let a player without the mod join a server with it, and the other way round. Update the server and all players together: versions before 1.2 show own-palette colours as white.
Existing portal names are kept: the mod uses the game's own portal name.
Do not use together with other mods that change how portals connect (XPortal and the like): PortalPicker does not load when XPortal is installed.
Settings
ShowDistance(server rule, default on): show the distance to each portal.NameLength(per player, 30): the longest name you can type.
