The panel

Updated 8 hours ago

Use the Frithstone to open it. Four tabs.

Settlers

Everyone who lives here, including the ones who are dead and counting down to their return and the ones whose chunk is not loaded - somebody gone for six minutes and somebody gone for good look identical if the panel says nothing.

Pick a resident and you get their trade, their mood, their skills, their appearance, and the list of materials they are allowed to touch. This is also where you rename them and where you dismiss them.

Stock

What the settlement holds, and what you want it to hold. Set a target for an item and the trades work towards it: the Cook stops making a dish once there are enough, the Forager keeps gathering while there are not.

Targets live on the Frithstone rather than on individual residents (UseLedger), so they survive somebody leaving.

Construction

Every plan laid out in the settlement, how many pieces are left, and what each still needs - delivered against the whole cost, not against what you happen to be carrying.

It also counts damaged buildings, which is what the Builder mends.

When a plan is stuck, the reason is written here rather than only in the log: waiting on materials, needs a crafting station the plan does not contain, nothing under it yet, or from a mod that is not installed.

Settings

Most of the config file, in the game. The two that matter most on the first day:

  • How far the frith reaches - the work radius around the stone.
  • Place areas on the world map / Draw work areas on the map - see Work areas.

The chest menu

Crouch + Use on a chest, rather than opening it, gives you its sorting rules.

Two buttons that sound alike and are not:

Button What it does
Take the list from the contents (top) ticks everything currently in the chest, so you can adjust from there
Read it from the contents (bottom) throws the hand-written list away and goes back to working the chest out automatically, then closes

The list you tick is what the Caretaker will carry to that chest. Keep saves it.

The same menu sets whether a chest is part of the settlement's intake - the chests residents may take tools, food and materials out of.

Hover shortcuts

  • Use on a resident - open its pack.
  • Shift+ Use on a chest - sorting and intake.
  • Shift + Use on a follower - come along, or stay.
