Trades

Updated 8 hours ago

Nine trades are handed out. Two more exist and are shown greyed out.

Every trade shares the same habits: it fetches its own tool, weapon and armour from settlement chests, hauls what it gathers back to them, eats twice a day, sleeps at night, and sits down when there is nothing to do. What follows is only what each one does on top of that.

Lumberjack

Fells trees inside its work area and hauls the logs home. Will replant, and keeps saplings at least 15m from the Frithstone (LumberjackFrithstoneClearance) so the settlement does not grow a forest through itself.

Needs an axe. A felled trunk that lands just outside the boundary is still finished - you may finish what you started outside the line, but not start something new out there.

Forager

Picks berries, mushrooms and anything else loose inside its area, and clears dropped resources off the ground.

Needs nothing but a chest. When it says there is nothing worth gathering it means there is nothing inside the circles - see Work areas, and the log line under Troubleshooting that counts exactly why.

Hunter

Stalks and kills game, then stands over the kill until it drops its meat rather than wandering off to the next deer.

Needs a weapon, and arrows if it carries a bow (ArrowSupply, 30 by default). It will not commit to an animal further than 60m off (MaxEngageDistance) and may take game a short walk outside its grounds. It breaks off below 45% health and rejoins above 80%.

Fisherman

Takes a raft, sails out to water deep enough, fishes, and brings the catch home. Turns for home after six fish (MaxCatch) or at nightfall.

Needs a fishing rod and a boat moored at the settlement. A settler at the helm sails briskly - HelmedShipBoost, twice vanilla by default - because a boat tuned for a player watching it is painfully slow for one crossing the same water all day.

Cook

Loads raw food into cooking stations, takes the finished dishes out, and keeps the larder stocked to what the household will actually eat rather than to whatever raw meat exists (CookForPopulation, MaxCookedStock, CookingReserve).

Needs a cooking station with fire.

Caretaker

Keeps the inside of the settlement: fuels fires and machines, empties and refills them, tidies loose items, and sorts chests according to the rules you set on them.

Needs nothing but chests. Note it can become absorbed in sorting - while it is carrying things to chests it does not get round to the fires; the log says so plainly.

Builder

Raises plans and mends the settlement's buildings.

Needs a hammer and the materials in a chest. A plan you have just laid out holds its hammer ahead of mending, because standing the building up is what you laid it out for. It fills its pack rather than fetching one stack at a time, raises everything within reach before taking a step, and leaves anything it would have to swim to for you.

See Builder's Hammer and blueprints.

Guard

Walks a round, answers the alarm, shuts gates left open, and defends the settlement.

Needs a weapon. Guards keep watch at night rather than sleeping, and sleep afterwards (RestHoursAfterShift). Patrol points are placed as build pieces up to 60m from the stone.

While the frith holds, the fighting is the guards' business and everyone else keeps to their trade. If a guard falls inside the walls the frith is broken and every armed resident defends its own ground until the alarm drops. A resident killed out at its work does not break the frith - it comes back, tells a guard where it happened, and the watch goes out to look.

Follower

Comes with you instead of working. Fights beside you, boards boats, goes through portals and into dungeons. Feeds itself from what it carries and needs no bed.

Crouch + Use on a resident tells it to come along or to stay. inn.follower.home sends any left behind in the world back to the Frithstone.

Farmer and Miner - not yet

Both are written and both are shown greyed out in the panel. Neither has been watched working through a full session, so neither is handed out. They are shown rather than removed so the row does not change shape on the day they open.
