Windless Sailing

Sail where you want to go, without waiting for the wind to turn.

Windless Sailing gives your boat steady forward thrust at half and full sail, whatever the weather is doing. It leaves the world's wind alone, so two players can sail in opposite directions without fighting over it.

How it feels

Use the usual sailing controls. Forward rowing and reverse work as before. Half sail gives you half thrust, and full sail gives you full thrust, with the same gradual acceleration and coasting.

Thrust is tuned around favorable vanilla sailing conditions. Each boat keeps its own handling and power, and waves, turns, and water resistance still affect your speed. This isn't a fixed-speed cruise control.

The wind indicator and sail visuals still follow the real wind. You can ignore them when choosing a heading.

Multiplayer

Everyone playing together should install the mod. Installing it only on the server won't do the job.

Valheim lets a player's client handle a boat's physics, and that player isn't always the one at the rudder. If an unmodded player takes over that job, the boat goes back to using normal wind physics. Keep everyone on the same mod version for consistent sailing.

Installation

Install through your mod manager and launch your modded profile. The BepInEx dependency will be installed with it.

For a manual install, install BepInExPack Valheim first, then put WindlessSailing.dll in BepInEx/plugins/WindlessSailing/ inside your Valheim folder.

That's it. There are no settings, hotkeys, or commands to turn on.

Compatibility

Built and checked against Valheim 1.0.15. Runtime checks passed, but a full dedicated-server sailing test hasn't been completed.

Other mods that change sailing forces may conflict. Custom boats that use the game's normal sailing code should pick up the change, but boats with their own physics may not.

To uninstall, disable the mod in your mod manager or remove its DLL with the game closed. It doesn't change your save format.
