Puppet Master
By Redzergling.
An Engineer-inspired survivor with 20 selectable skills and an army of item-inheriting puppets. Formerly Summoner; existing loadout identifiers remain compatible. The player has an original porcelain-and-brass marionette model, spindle rifle, split coat and glowing spool backpack. It uses Railgunner's existing movement, aiming, firing and character-select animations. Both hands fit the rifle grips; commands release the grip for the native throwing gesture. All 20 skills have distinct original icons, with a separate Strings Attached passive icon. Summons still use their existing game appearances; replacement summon art is separate work.
Beta 0.4.4 balance: Puppet Master and summon attack damage is reduced by 80% through a final 0.2 damage multiplier, except Horizon Rail, which retains its original full damage, including inherited item and Overclock bonuses. The skill percentages below still refer to the unit's current damage stat. Healing skills, health, attack speed, cooldowns and summon limits are unchanged. The global multiplier is configurable; Horizon Rail is exempt. Its rail-shot coefficient remains separately configurable.
Item procs: all four primary weapons use a 0.2 proc coefficient per hit (including each Scrapshot pellet and Arc Welder damage tick). Damaging summon attacks use 0.5, including Commando Double Tap, melee, arrows, mortar blasts and each Arc Pylon hit. Horizon Rail retains 1.0. Healing actions and native item-generated effects retain their existing behavior.
Ping commands: use the game's normal Ping binding on an enemy to focus your own attacking summons on it. The order lasts until that enemy dies, you cancel the ping by pinging it again, or you ping something else. It outlasts the visual ping marker and takes priority over temporary Designator marks. New summons adopt your current order. Ground, interactable and friendly pings clear enemy focus. Mobile attackers pursue the target; firing still requires their normal range and line of sight. Emplacements wait if that target is blocked or out of range. Horizon Rail has no firing-distance cap. Repair units continue healing.
Skills
Choose one of four unlocked skills in each slot through the character's loadout. The original five choices remain the defaults. Alternative cooldowns are configurable.
| Default input | Skill | Default behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Left mouse | Pulse Rifle | 7.5 shots per second, 60% damage per shot. |
| Right mouse | Overclock | Your constructs gain 50% damage and attack speed for 8 seconds. 12-second cooldown. |
| Shift | Pocket Squad | Three miniature constructs resembling Commando, Huntress, and Loader. They follow you and shoot weak pulses; they do not use those heroes' abilities. Replaces the previous squad. 12-second cooldown. |
| R | Fireteam | Summon a 65%-size Commando who follows you and uses the real Double Tap basic attack, with its pistol animations and sounds. Uses Commando's body/stats and AI rather than a turret chassis. Maximum two; replaces the oldest. 20-second cooldown. |
| First side mouse button | Horizon Rail | Deploy a larger stationary turret firing piercing 1200% railgun shots every 3 seconds. Maximum one. 35-second cooldown. |
| Slot | Alternative | Behavior / default cooldown |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | Designator Burst | Three 70% shots. Hit the same enemy with the whole burst to direct mobile puppets toward it for 6 seconds. |
| Primary | Scrapshot | Six 45% pellets with short-range knockback and damage falloff. |
| Primary | Arc Welder | Short beam: 250% damage per second, or repair an aimed owned puppet. Attack speed affects tick rate. |
| Secondary | Coordinated Volley | Command one eligible attack per puppet against the aimed target; support units repair instead. 10 seconds. |
| Secondary | Entrench Protocol | Puppets hold position for 6 seconds, gain 80 armor and a non-stacking 15% barrier. 14 seconds. |
| Secondary | Field Refit | Heal injured puppets with a shared budget; advance summon cooldowns by 4 seconds. 16 seconds. |
| Utility | Bulwark Pair | Two small Loader-shaped guards with staggering 180% punches. 14 seconds. |
| Utility | Repair Flight | Two small healing drones; prioritize owned puppets, then their master. 18 seconds. |
| Utility | Phase Muster | Move up to 12 meters to safe ground and recall surviving mobile puppets. No heal or revival. Emplacements stay placed. 10 seconds. |
| Special | Ranger Pair | Two small Huntress-shaped rangers firing colliding homing arrows for 140% damage. 22 seconds. |
| Special | Siege Walker | One compact MUL-T-shaped unit that plants itself to fire 12 nails for 35% each. 28 seconds. |
| Special | Interceptor Cadre | Two small Mercenary-shaped units with short dashes and three-hit sword combinations. 24 seconds. |
| Extra Skill 1 | Siege Mortar | One stationary mortar: 900% explosive shells, 8-meter blast, 180-meter targeting range. 35 seconds. |
| Extra Skill 1 | Arc Pylon | One pylon: 220% lightning strike, up to three weaker chain jumps. Initial range 35 meters. 30 seconds. |
| Extra Skill 1 | Aegis Station | One support station: frontal shield active for 4 of every 8 seconds, plus nearby puppet repairs. Allies can fire through. 35 seconds. |
Utility summon choices replace the previous Utility squad. Special alternatives replace the previous Special force. All Extra Skill 1 choices share one emplacement limit. Commands and inventory updates apply only to the casting player's puppets. Aegis is a frontal shield, not immunity to attacks from every direction or area effects.
Horizon Rail searches every active enemy on the current stage without a distance cap. Terrain blocks targeting and shots. Placement is within 60 meters of your aim; placement distance does not limit the turret's firing range.
Every summon inherits your item stacks at spawn. Later pickups and item removals update every summon, including Pocket Squad, Fireteam, and Horizon Rail. This is always enabled. Equipment is not copied. Summons disappear when your current body dies or leaves the stage; deploy a new formation on the next stage. Each player has their own summon limits and Overclock affects only that player's constructs.
Install with Thunderstore Mod Manager
When this package is available on Thunderstore, install it through the manager with its dependencies. For a local beta ZIP, use these steps:
- Install the dependencies listed in the manifest, including ExtraSkillSlots 1.7.0 and ScrollableLobbyUI 1.10.7 or newer compatible versions.
- In your chosen profile, use Settings > Profile > Import local mod and choose
the supplied
Redzergling-Summoner-0.4.4.zip. - Start modded and select Puppet Master. Open its loadout to select alternatives.
When updating a local import, replace the previous Summoner package rather than keeping two versions enabled. The DLL remains Summoner.dll for compatibility.
Upgrading from 0.4.3 or earlier: remove the old AIManufacturing-Summoner plugin
folder or local import before installing this release. Existing settings migrate
automatically from com.AIManufacturing.Summoner.cfg when the new
com.Redzergling.Summoner.cfg does not yet exist. Existing Redzergling settings
take priority. Saved survivor/loadout identifiers are retained.
Alternatively, extract the package's BepInEx folder into your mod-manager profile
folder after installing the dependencies. Do not place it in the Steam game folder.
To remove it, uninstall the locally imported package, or remove only
BepInEx/plugins/Redzergling-Summoner from the profile.
Controls and configuration
The first side button is Mouse3 in Unity/BepInEx naming. The second is Mouse4;
middle/wheel click is Mouse2.
The side-button shortcut is configured under Controls in
BepInEx/config/com.Redzergling.Summoner.cfg. Set it to None to disable the
additional shortcut. You can also bind Extra Skill 1 in the game's Controls
menu; that binding supplies the fifth HUD slot's displayed key. If your side button
is already assigned to another game action, clear that conflicting binding.
Default skill damage, firing rate, construct health, cooldowns and buff strength/duration are configurable. New alternative cooldowns have their own configuration section. Item inheritance is always enabled; an obsolete setting from 0.1.0 no longer disables it. Restart the game after changing settings. Everyone in a lobby should use matching settings and the same mod version.
Compatibility and credits
Built against Risk of Rain 2 1.5.0. Uses BepInEx, R2API, ExtraSkillSlots by KingEnderBrine, and ScrollableLobbyUI. Original player mesh and icon artwork are included. Native animation, turret and summon appearance assets are loaded from the installed game at runtime; no game assets are redistributed.
Engineer is the gameplay reference. The original Puppet Master mesh uses Railgunner's animation rig. This is a separate survivor and does not replace or alter either original hero. The new artwork changes the player and character-select display. Summon replacement models are not part of this release.
This is the first balance iteration. See the delivered validation notes for the checks completed on this build; remote multiplayer playtesting is separate from local server testing. See BETA-TEST.txt for the next private playtest checks.
Created with AI-assisted programming and original procedural player/icon artwork.
