High Contrast Enemies (Fixed)

Gives living enemies a bright outline so they're easier to see. This is a temporary fix of swuff-star's HighContrastEnemies for the current game (the Hallowed Concepts update), meant to fill the gap until the original is updated. All credit for the idea goes to swuff-star.

By default every stage gets its own outline color, picked to stand out from that stage. You can switch to one color everywhere, change the colors and the outline strength from an in-game settings page, give specific enemies their own color, and optionally outline allies and other players.

Client-side: only you need it, and you can join any lobby with it.

In-game settings

Open Settings, then Mod Options, then HighContrastEnemiesFixed (this page comes from Risk of Options, which installs with the mod). Changes apply right away, even mid-run.

  • Enabled: turn the outlines on or off.
  • Color Mode: PerStage (default) uses a color chosen for each stage; SingleColor uses Single Color everywhere.
  • Single Color: color picker for SingleColor mode.
  • Fallback Color: color picker for stages that aren't in any per-stage list, such as new DLC stages.
  • Outline Strength: slider from 0.25x to 3x. Higher is brighter and more solid; the line width is set by the game.
  • Toggle Key: a key to switch the outlines on and off while playing.
  • Custom Color 1 to 3: color pickers for the stages you put in the Custom Color lists.
  • Highlight Allies, Ally Color, Highlight Players, Use Body Color: optional outlines for your side. Your own character is never outlined.

Config file only

These are in BepInEx/config/HighContrastEnemiesFixed.cfg (or the Config editor in r2modman). Edits are picked up when the next stage loads.

  • Per-stage lists: comma-separated internal stage names for each color. The BepInEx log names each stage that isn't in a list ("Stage "…" isn't in any per-stage color list") so you can add it.
  • Enemies to Outline: colors for specific enemies, such as LemurianBody,#FFFFFF;MimicBody,#00000000. A fully transparent color means "never outline this one"; the default keeps Mimics disguised.
  • Use Only Specified Highlights: outline only the enemies in that list.
  • Log Enemy Names: write enemy body names to the log, for use in the list above.

Invisible and cloaked enemies stay hidden, as in the base game.

How it works

The outlines are drawn by the game's own outline effect, the one it uses for chests and pinged targets. Every frame the mod hands that effect the models of living enemies, and it asks the effect to stay switched on (the game only runs it while something has asked). It adds nothing to the scene and doesn't need R2API.

If a future game update changes something the mod relies on, it switches the outlines off and writes one clear error to the BepInEx log instead of breaking anything else.

  • The outline technique follows revoreverse's AllyClarity, which is public domain.
  • Rune580: Risk of Options, which provides the in-game settings page.
