| Action | Default key | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Character sheet | L | Opens and closes the character sheet. |
| Adventurer's Log | K | Journal, titles, background, deity, multiclass, spells, skills, class features, reactions, alignment, dice, bounties and settings. Look at another player and press K to inspect them. |
| Race ability | H | What it does depends on your race. See the Races page. |
| Race ability 2 | J | Only used by the Fairy (Faerie Fire) and the Aesborn (Radiant Awakening). |
| Next spell | O | Tap for the next spell. Hold to open the spellbook. Spells you have switched off on the character sheet are skipped. |
| Previous spell | I | Steps backwards (Shift+O does too). |
| Cast spell | P | Casts the selected spell. For Enlarge/Reduce, Shift+P casts Reduce. |
| Class ability | Z | What it does depends on your class. See the Classes page. |
| Class ability 2 | X | Only classes with a second ability use it. |
| Class feature | G | Uses your selected class feature (Turn Undead, Action Surge, a maneuver, metamagic, Cunning Action...). Shift+G selects the next one. New in 1.2.0. |
| Spell target lock | T | Locks targeted spells on to the enemy in front of you; press again with nothing in front to clear. New in 1.2.0. |
| Pick a lock / force a chest | E / Shift+E | On a locked chest (1.2.0): E picks the lock with Dexterity (and thieves' tools proficiency), Shift+E forces it with Athletics. |
| Fly (toggle) | F | Take off or land. Only works if your race, class, an active spell or Radiant Awakening lets you fly. |
| Fly up | Space (hold) | While flying. |
| Fly down | Left Ctrl (hold) | While flying. |
| Feat abilities 1-4 | N, B, Y, U | Filled in order by the active feats you own (Power Attack, Fey-Blessed's blink, Unseen Hand's shove, Mind Speaker's message). Settings shows what each slot does for you. |
Other controls
- Moving while flying: horizontal flight uses W, A, S and D (or a controller's left stick), relative to where the camera faces, even if you have rebound Valheim's movement keys.
- While flying, Space and Left Ctrl only climb and descend. They don't also jump or toggle sneak.
- Appearance customizer: hold the Left/Right arrow keys to turn the camera around your character, and Up/Down arrow keys to zoom.
- Spell HUD: the list of known spells in the lower left always shows the label "O: cycle, P: cast", even if you rebind those keys. Spells you have switched off don't appear in it.
Controller and Steam Deck (experimental, since 1.0.6)
The mod reads controllers directly, so you don't need Steam Input to map buttons to keyboard keys. If you set that up before, turn it off for Valheim.
Vanilla Valheim already uses every button on a controller, so most mod actions are LB + button combos (vanilla uses LB as its own modifier too). While you hold a combo, the vanilla action on its second button is blocked for attack, secondary attack, jump, dodge and crouch. That doesn't work for X, Y or the D-pad, so combos on those can still trigger their vanilla action.
| Action | Default button |
|---|---|
| Fly (toggle) | LB + A |
| Fly up / down | Hold A / B while flying (jump and dodge are off while flying) |
| Move while flying | Left stick |
| Next spell | LB + D-pad Right (hold to open the spellbook) |
| Previous spell | LB + D-pad Left |
| Cast spell | LB + RT |
| Class ability | LB + RB |
| Character sheet, Class ability 2, Race abilities, Feat abilities 1-4 | Unbound |
Spellbook on a controller: holding Next spell opens it as a spell wheel (since 1.0.7) and it stays open. Point the right stick at a spell to highlight it (Next/Previous also move the highlight), Cast casts and closes it, B closes it.
Button hints (since 1.0.7): while you use a controller and no menu is open, a strip at the bottom of the screen lists the mod's button combos. Turn it off with ShowButtonHints.
This hasn't been tested on a real controller yet. Please report anything that feels wrong on the Discord with /bug.
Rebinding keys in game
- Open Settings > Keyboard & Mouse.
- Scroll below the vanilla key list to the Fifth Edition Fantasy section.
- Click the key next to an action. It changes to press a key.
- Press the new key. Keyboard keys and extra mouse buttons (middle, side buttons) work. Left and right click can't be used.
While a key is waiting for input:
- Esc cancels and keeps the old key.
- Backspace or Delete unbinds the action. It then shows as
-and does nothing.
Changes take effect immediately and are saved to the config file right away.
Controller buttons are in the Controller column next to the keyboard keys. Select a row (click it, or press A on it), then press a button. For a combo, hold the first button and press the second. Start clears the binding, Esc cancels. Controller combos that clash also turn red.
Clashes: if two of the mod's actions share a key, both rows turn red and get a ! mark. This only checks the mod's own keys against each other. It doesn't warn you about clashes with vanilla keys or other mods. Fly up and Fly down share Space and Left Ctrl with vanilla Jump and Crouch on purpose.
Resetting: the vanilla Reset button in the settings menu doesn't touch this mod's keys. To restore a default, rebind it by hand using the table above, or reset the config file (see below).
Config file
All settings live in:
BepInEx/config/jdvanaus.fifthedition.cfg
With a mod manager this is inside your profile folder. r2modman and the Thunderstore Mod Manager also have a built-in Config editor. The file is created the first time you start the game with the mod. Edit it while the game is closed.
To reset everything to defaults, close the game and delete the file. It is recreated with default values the next time you start the game.
Flight settings [Flight]
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
ToggleKey |
F | Take off or land. |
AscendKey |
Space | Hold to climb while flying. |
DescendKey |
LeftControl | Hold to descend while flying. |
StaminaPerSecond |
6 | Stamina used per second while you move in flight. Climbing costs 1.8 times this. Hovering in place costs nothing and regains stamina at the normal standing-still rate. |
MaxSpeed |
12 | Horizontal flight speed in metres per second. |
MaxAltitude |
60 | How high above the ground you can climb, in metres. Set to 0 for no limit. |
PassiveGlideSpeed |

FlyingSkillMaxStaminaReduction |
0.5 | How much less stamina flying uses at Flying skill 100 (0.5 = half, like the Run skill). 0 turns the skill's effect off. In multiplayer the server's value applies. |
Flight rules that aren't configurable:
- You climb and descend at a fixed speed.
- If you run out of stamina, you hover in place and can't move until stamina is back to 30%. Let go of the movement keys to recover faster.
- You can't fly, and you land automatically, while dead, swimming, sitting or at a ship's helm, inside a dungeon or other interior, encumbered, or wearing heavy armor. Heavy armor means any helmet, chest or leg piece weighing 12 or more.
- Fairies never take fall damage. Other races take normal fall damage if they stop flying in mid-air.

Other sections
The file also contains a few other sections that aren't used during normal play. Leave them at their defaults.
Notes
- Use single keys. The in-game menu always saves a single key, and key combinations typed into the config file aren't reliably supported.
- These settings are per player. The server doesn't sync them. Each player's own flight settings apply to their own character.
