Adventuring

New in 1.0.7: the Adventurer's Log, backgrounds, deities, multiclassing, bounties, places to find, magic items and a few tabletop combat rules.

Adventurer's Log (K)

Press K to open the Log. Its tabs:

Tab What it holds
Journal Level-ups, bosses, bounties, shrines and other deeds, written down automatically (the last 150 entries).
Titles Titles you've earned. Pick one to show after your name; other players see it too.
Background Pick your background (see below).
Deity Swear to a god for a small boon.
Multiclass From level 4, train in a second class.
Bounties Your active bounties. At a trader, also that trader's offers for the day.
Settings Beginner mode and other per-character options.

Look at another player and press K to see their race, class, level, background and title.

Titles

There are 17 titles to earn, such as the Veteran (defeat 250 creatures), Sky Dancer (30 minutes flying), Friend of Beasts (a Druid who has seen every Wild Shape animal) and Mimic-Wary. The Titles tab shows how to earn each one.

Backgrounds

A small, permanent bonus. New characters get a one-time reminder to pick one; a vendor reset clears it.

Background Bonus
Soldier +10% melee damage
Sage +20 maximum Eitr
Outlander +50 carry weight
Criminal Creatures notice you from 20% closer
Acolyte +20% healing received
Folk Hero +15 maximum health

Deities

Deity Domain Boon
Odin Knowledge +10% spirit and lightning damage from spells
Thor Storm +10% lightning and blunt damage
Freyja Life +15% healing received
Tyr War +8% melee damage and 10% less damage taken while blocking
Loki Trickery Creatures notice you from 15% closer

Clerics and Paladins get the full boon; everyone else gets half. Praying at a wayshrine doubles it for 10 minutes.

Multiclassing

From level 4 you can pick a second class on the Multiclass tab. You learn its spells 3 levels later than a single-class caster would (never before level 4). A vendor reset clears it.

Beginner mode

New characters start with a shorter spell list (3 spells, plus 2 more per level) so the spellbook isn't overwhelming. Turn it off any time on the Settings tab. Server owners can change the default with BeginnerModeForNewCharacters.

Bounties

Every trader posts three bounties a day: hunt a number of creatures or gather a number of items, matched to how many bosses you've defeated. Open them with the trader's Bounties (daily work) button.

  • You can hold up to 3 bounties at once, and each offer can be completed once per day.
  • Kills count for whoever lands the killing blow, also in multiplayer.
  • Gather bounties count your inventory and your Bag of Holding.
  • Turn a finished bounty in at any trader. Rewards are coins, and there's a 30% chance of a spell scroll or magic item. If your inventory is full, the reward drops at your feet.

Places to find

These appear in newly explored areas. Each can be used once a day.

Place What it does
Wayshrine Pray to double your deity's boon for 10 minutes.
Druid grove Faster healing and stamina for 10 minutes. A Druid also learns a Wild Shape form they haven't seen yet.
Ruined wizard tower Search it for a spell scroll and Arcane Insight.

Mimics: some dungeon and buried treasure chests bite back. The chest's contents are dropped when it springs.

Magic items

Item Crafted at Effect
Boots of Striding and Springing Workbench 3 +15% movement speed and higher jumps (utility slot)
Cloak of Elvenkind Workbench 3 Creatures see and hear you less easily
Ring of Feather Falling Forge 2 No fall damage (utility slot)
Wand of Magic Missiles Workbench 4 Fires Magic Missile with no Eitr. 7 charges, recharges when you become Rested
Pearl of Power Galdr table Once per rest, restores every spell's free cast

Spell scrolls (Magic Missile, Shield, Cure Wounds, Misty Step, Invisibility, Fireball, Lightning Bolt, Fly, Haste, Mass Healing Word, Heal and Ice Storm) are found in chests and as bounty rewards. Anyone can read one to cast the spell once, even a Barbarian. A scroll or wand charge isn't used up if the spell can't go off, for example with no target or while wild shaped.

Combat rules

  • Dice: every hit rolls a d20 behind the scenes. A natural 20 doubles the damage and a natural 1 halves it, with a popup.
  • Conditions: Thunderwave, Shatter and Thunder Strike knock enemies Prone; Hold Person also Restrains; a natural 20 can Frighten a wounded foe so it runs.
  • Concentration: only one concentration spell at a time, and a heavy hit can break it. See the Spells page.
  • Adaptive bosses: a boss hit mostly by one damage type briefly resists it. Mix it up.
  • Server admins can turn dice and adaptive bosses off (DiceRolls, AdaptiveBosses).

Bag of Holding and stations

Smelters, kilns, furnaces, cooking stations, fermenters and fires can take ore, fuel and food straight from your Bag of Holding. When there's a choice, a picker lets you choose what to add (Add 1, Add 5 or Fill). On a station another player is tending, items go in one at a time.
