Multiplayer & FAQ

Multiplayer

  • Every player needs the mod installed, along with BepInExPack_Valheim and Jotunn. Use the same mod version for everyone.
  • The mod runs in the game client. Since 1.0.7 it can also be installed on a server: gameplay settings (flight tuning, dice rolls, adaptive bosses) then follow the server's config. Keybinds and other personal settings stay per player.
  • Dice in chat: type /roll, /roll d20 or /roll 2d6+3 in chat, and everyone nearby sees the result.
  • Other players see your race. Your race, class and appearance are shared with other players who have the mod, so they see your race's look and any customized Fairy colors.
  • Other players see your Wild Shape. When a Druid shifts, everyone else sees the creature form move and attack.
  • Lighter with more players (1.2.5). Each player's HUD, windows and hotkeys run only on that player's own game, and other players' tails and wings update less often the farther away they are, so adding players costs less.
  • Each player picks their own race, class, subclass and feats on their own character sheet.
  • Levels are per character, and boss fights credit everyone. When a boss or miniboss dies, every player who hit it or was within 60 m of it gets the level, whoever landed the killing blow and whoever is hosting. A player who hit the boss but was dead when it died gets the level on respawn.

Platforms and crossplay

  • Windows: fully supported.
  • macOS: experimental since 1.0.3. The mod ships a separate set of Mac art assets, but it hasn't been tested on a real Mac yet. If something looks wrong (missing or pink wings, ears or effects), report it on the Discord with /bug.
  • Linux (native or Proton): untested.
  • Console crossplay: not supported. Xbox, PlayStation and Switch players can't install mods. On a crossplay server every PC player still needs the mod, and console players won't see or share any of its races, classes or spells.

Achievements

Valheim normally turns off all achievements, including Steam achievements, as soon as any mod is loaded. Since 1.0.3, Fifth Edition Fantasy turns them back on.

  • Real cheats still turn them off, as in vanilla: using devcommands + confirmcheats, carrying spawned (cheated) items, or playing a world with cheated world modifiers.
  • The mod's own test commands count as cheats (race, class, subclass, feat, resetcharacter, fairy, selftest and the wild shape test commands). Using them marks that character as cheated for good. level and achievementstatus are normal commands.
  • Kills while Invisible count. Creatures you hit while Invisible or Greater Invisible count toward achievements like any other kill.
  • To check, open the console with F5 and type achievementstatus. It tells you whether achievements can progress for your character and world, and why not if they can't.
  • To keep vanilla's behavior (no achievements while modded), set AllowAchievementsWhenModded = false under [Achievements] in BepInEx/config/jdvanaus.fifthedition.cfg.
  • Progress made while playing modded before 1.0.3 wasn't recorded by the game, so it can't be recovered.

Where your data is saved

What Where
Race, class, subclass, feats, boss credit (level), spells switched on or off, and appearance choices Saved with your character. They follow the character into any world or server.
Keybinds and other settings BepInEx/config/jdvanaus.fifthedition.cfg on your own computer.

Because progress is stored on the character and not the world:

  • A character keeps their level when joining a different world.
  • A new character starts at level 1, even in a world where the bosses are already dead. Summon a boss again and help defeat it to earn its credit.

FAQ

Do I have to pick a race and class? No. A character with nothing picked plays like vanilla. But you only get racial traits, class abilities and spells once you pick.

Does picking or changing race or class cost anything? Your first race, class and subclass picks are free. After that they're locked, like feats. To choose again, use the 200-coin Reset Race, Class & Feats at a trader (see the Vendors & Appearance page). It also clears your ability scores and prepared spells.

Why can't I cast a spell? Check the Spells tab on the character sheet. It tells you whether you know the spell, and if not, the level at which you will learn it and from what source. Also check:

  • Leveled spells need a free spell slot of the spell's level or higher (shown above the ability hotbar). Rest to get slots back. Prepared casters also need the spell on their prepared list (Adventurer's Log, Spells tab).
  • If a spell doesn't come up when you press O, check that it isn't switched off on the Spells tab (it shows (off) after its name).
  • Each spell has a recast cooldown.
  • Spells can't be cast while wild shaped.
  • If there's nothing in range to target, most targeted spells don't go off, and then they use no slot and start no cooldown.

Why can't I fly? Only some races fly (Fairy, Skyfolk, Owlkin and Glidefolk). Sorcerers fly at level 12, and some spells and abilities also grant flight. Even then you can't fly while wearing heavy armor (any helmet, chest or leg piece weighing 12 or more), while encumbered, swimming or sitting, or inside a dungeon or other interior. If you run out of stamina you hover in place until it recovers to 30%.

When do my spell slots and abilities come back? On a long rest (sleep in a bed): all slots, full health and every ability. A short rest (sit by a fire for 60 seconds without taking damage) brings back short-rest abilities and Warlock slots and lets you heal with hit dice. See Fifth Edition Rules. (Servers set to SpellSystem = Eitr use the old rule: free casts come back when you become Rested.)

How do I level up? Land at least one hit on each boss or miniboss, or be within 60 m of it when it dies. See the Leveling & Character Sheet page.

I missed a boss level in version 1.0.0. Can I get it back? Yes. In 1.0.0, boss levels didn't always reach every player in multiplayer. Open the console with F5 and type level grant followed by the boss, for example level grant Eikthyr, then press Enter. The boss names to use are Eikthyr, Elder, Bonemass, Moder, Yagluth, Queen, Fader, Brenna, Geirrhafa, HildirShaman (Zil & Thungr) and LordReto. Only use it for fights you really took part in.

Some in-game text mentions "Fenring". Where is that? Older text in the game uses that name for the trader dialog, which every trader offers. There is no separate character to find.

Can I still play my character without the mod? Your race, class, feats and level are stored in the character's own save data, and the mod reads them again when you load the character with the mod. The mod's Goodberry item only exists while the mod is loaded. Valheim removes items it doesn't recognize when it loads a character, so eat or drop any Goodberries before playing without the mod.

Troubleshooting

The mod doesn't seem to load

Signs: there's no Fifth Edition Fantasy section under Settings > Keyboard & Mouse, L does nothing, and traders open their store straight away.

  1. Make sure you started the game through your mod manager's Start modded button, or that BepInEx is installed correctly for a manual install.
  2. Make sure Jotunn and BepInExPack_Valheim are installed and enabled.
  3. For a manual install, check that FifthEditionFantasy.dll is in BepInEx/plugins.
  4. Open BepInEx/LogOutput.log and look for errors that mention Fifth Edition Fantasy or Jotunn.

A key doesn't work or does two things

  • Open Settings > Keyboard & Mouse and look at the Fifth Edition Fantasy section. Rows shown in red with a ! share a key with another of the mod's actions. Rebind one of them.
  • The red warning only covers the mod's own keys. If another mod or a vanilla action uses the same key, rebind one of them.
  • Make sure the action applies to you. For example, Race ability 2 (J) does nothing for most races, and feat keys need the matching feat. Check what each hotbar slot holds: open the inventory and hover over a slot.

Resetting keybinds

The vanilla Reset button doesn't reset this mod's keys. Either:

  • rebind each key by hand in Settings > Keyboard & Mouse (defaults are listed on the Controls & Settings page), or
  • close the game and delete BepInEx/config/jdvanaus.fifthedition.cfg. It is recreated with all defaults, including non-key settings, the next time you start the game.

Checking your install with selftest

The mod includes a selftest console command that checks every race, class, subclass, spell and feat.

  1. Open the in-game console with F5. If it doesn't open, add -console to Valheim's launch options.
  2. Type devcommands and press Enter, then confirmcheats and press Enter. Since 1.0.3 selftest is a cheat command, and it only works in single player or when you're the host. This permanently turns off achievements for that character.
  3. Type selftest and press Enter.
  4. The console prints a summary when it finishes: how many steps passed and failed, with each failure listed. A line for every step is also written to BepInEx/LogOutput.log, marked [SELFTEST].

You can test one area at a time with selftest races, selftest classes, selftest subclasses, selftest spells or selftest feats. Plain selftest runs everything.

Before you run it, read this. The self-test really uses your character:

  • It switches through every race and class, casts every spell, uses every ability and toggles every feat.
  • It temporarily raises you to level 12.
  • It spawns a boar in front of you as a target.

At the end it puts your race, class, subclass, feats and level back and removes the boar. Spells cast during the test can still leave marks on the world. Run it on a throwaway character in a throwaway world. Don't quit or log out until it prints its summary, or your character may be left with the test's changes.

Reporting bugs

Please report bugs on the Discord server with /bug. Since 1.2.1, pressing F7 in game opens an error log window: copy its parts into your report, or use its Open Discord / Copy link buttons if you aren't on the server yet. Since 1.0.7, typing fefbug in the F5 console copies a ready-to-paste report (version, character, other mods, recent errors) to your clipboard, or on the mod's Thunderstore page (package jdvanaus-Fifth_Edition_Fantasy). Include:

  • what you were doing and what went wrong
  • your mod version and a list of your other mods
  • your BepInEx/LogOutput.log file
  • whether you were in single player, hosting, or joined someone else's game
  • if you ran selftest, its summary
