15. Console Commands
Updated a day agoConsole Commands
Since 1.2.6, everything the mod can be told to do from the console goes through one command: fef. It covers every setting in the config file and a set of admin tools for characters and items. Since 1.2.7 it also has tools for a DM, parties and a campaign journal.
Open the console with F5, type fef and press Tab. Each word autofills one step at a time, so you never have to remember a name:
fef+ Tab cycles through the commands (give,level,config...).fef give+ Tab lists the players who are online, plusmeandall.fef give Astrid+ Tab lists every item in the game. Type a few letters first (fef give Astrid Swo) and the list above the input line narrows to the matches.fef config set+ Tab lists every setting; after a setting, Tab offers the values it accepts (true/false, the allowed choices, or key names for hotkeys).
fef help lists every command, and fef help level (or any other group) shows just one group.
Who can use what
| What | Who |
|---|---|
Reading: help, players, config list, config get, and info, level show, featslot show, feat list, abilities show or reaction list on yourself |
Everyone |
Your own settings: config set / config reset on a per-player setting (keys, HUD, reaction animations...) |
Everyone |
Switching your own reactions on and off: reaction on/off me ... |
Everyone |
Party commands, note, journal, recap, quest list, assist, inspiration give, race list, class list |
Everyone |
DM tools (announce, freeze, check, spawn, encounter, quest add...) and turning races or classes on and off |
The host or a server admin |
| Changing a character (level, feats, race, class, items...), even your own | The host, single player, or a server admin |
Server settings (marked server in config list) |
The host or a server admin. The change applies to everyone online at once. |
| Anything aimed at another player | The host or a server admin |
Server admins are the players listed in the server's adminlist.txt (one Steam/platform ID per line), the same list vanilla uses. On a dedicated server the server checks the list before passing a command on, so Fifth Edition Fantasy has to be installed on the server for admin commands to reach other players.
Character data is saved with each player's own character, so a command aimed at someone is carried out by their game, and the result comes back to your console (for example Astrid: level 6 (bosses 4, admin +2)). The player sees a short "Admin: ..." note top-left when something about their character changes. They have to be online with a character loaded.
Choosing who: <player>
| You type | Means |
|---|---|
| A character name | That player. Not case-sensitive. On a server, the start of a name is enough if only one player matches (jon for Jonathan). |
me |
Yourself. Your own name works too. |
all |
Everyone online, including you. |
Commands
Help and information
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
fef help [command] |
Lists every command, or one group (fef help config). |
fef players |
The players online: the names the other commands autofill. |
fef info <player> |
Race, class and subclass, level (and where it comes from), background, deity, alignment, ability scores, feats and feat picks, health and exhaustion. |
Items
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
fef give <player> <item> [amount] [quality] |
Puts the item in their inventory. Whatever doesn't fit drops at their feet. <item> is the item's prefab name (SwordIron, Wood, MeadHealthMinor, FEF_SRD_PotionHealing); the mod's magic items also work without the FEF_SRD_ part. Amount up to 999. |
fef token <player> [book] [amount] |
Gives reward books (see below). book is level (the default), feat, str, dex, con, int, wis or cha. fef token Astrid 3 gives three Tomes of Advancement. |
Reward books
Admin and DM rewards. They can't be crafted and never drop as loot; players get them from fef token (or fef give with the item name). Using one (right-click it in the inventory) reads it, and it's used up. If it can't do anything for the reader, it isn't used up.
book |
Item | When read |
|---|---|---|
level |
Tome of Advancement | +1 character level (up to 12), and the level-up screen opens. |
feat |
Codex of Hidden Talents | +1 feat choice, picked on the character sheet. Like any feat pick, from level 4 it can also be spent on an Ability Score Improvement. |
str |
Manual of Gainful Exercise | Strength +2, and the Strength maximum +2. |
dex |
Manual of Quickness of Action | Dexterity +2, and its maximum +2. |
con |
Manual of Bodily Health | Constitution +2, and its maximum +2. |
int |
Tome of Clear Thought | Intelligence +2, and its maximum +2. |
wis |
Tome of Understanding | Wisdom +2, and its maximum +2. |
cha |
Tome of Leadership and Influence | Charisma +2, and its maximum +2. |
Ability scores normally stop at 20. Each manual or tome raises that limit by 2, so a character who reads two Manuals of Gainful Exercise can reach Strength 24. Nothing goes above 30. Ability Score Improvements still stop at 20. The book bonuses survive a character reset (fef reset or the trader's reset). fef abilities clearbooks <player> [ability] removes them.
Level
A character's level normally comes from the bosses they helped defeat (see Leveling & Character Sheet). Admins can add an admin bonus on top: it can be positive or negative, it's saved with the character, and boss kills keep counting as normal. The level always stays between 1 and 12.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
fef level show <player> |
The level, the boss-credit level and the admin bonus. |
fef level set <player> <1-12> |
Makes the character exactly this level. Boss credits stay; the difference becomes the admin bonus. |
fef level add <player> [n] |
Raises the level by n (1 if left out). |
fef level remove <player> [n] |
Lowers the level by n (1 if left out). |
fef level reset <player> |
Removes the admin bonus: back to the level the boss credits give. |
fef level boss <player> <boss> [on/off] |
Gives (or takes away) the credit for one boss, as if they had fought it: Eikthyr, Elder, Bonemass, Moder, Yagluth, Queen, Fader and the others Tab lists. |
Going up a level opens the level-up screen for that player, the same as a boss kill.
Feat slots and feats
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
fef featslot show <player> |
Feat picks: how many in total, used and free, and the admin bonus. |
fef featslot add <player> [n] |
n extra feat picks (1 if left out). |
fef featslot remove <player> [n] |
n fewer feat picks. |
fef featslot set <player> <bonus> |
Sets the admin feat-pick bonus directly (-4 to 20). |
fef feat list <player> |
The character's feats. |
fef feat grant <player> <feat> |
Gives a feat. It uses one of their feat picks, so to make it free, add a feat slot first. |
fef feat revoke <player> <feat> |
Takes a feat away and frees its pick. |
fef feat clear <player> |
Removes every feat. |
Race, class and the rest of the character
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
fef race set <player> <race> |
Sets the race. Human means no race. |
fef race reset <player> |
Clears the race so the player can pick again on the character sheet (L). |
fef class set <player> <class> |
Sets the class. |
fef class reset <player> |
Clears class, subclass, multiclass and prepared spells so the player can pick again. |
fef subclass set <player> <subclass> |
Sets the subclass. It has to belong to their class, and it switches on at that class's subclass level. |
fef subclass reset <player> |
Clears the subclass. |
fef background set/reset <player> [background] |
Sets or clears the background. |
fef deity set/reset <player> [deity] |
Sets or clears the deity. |
fef alignment set <player> <alignment> |
LG NG CG LN N CN LE NE CE, or U for unaligned. |
fef abilities show <player> |
The six ability scores and modifiers. |
fef abilities set <player> <STR..CHA> <score> |
Sets one final score (3-20, or higher up to the maximum their manuals and tomes allow). Racial bonuses, ASIs, feat and book bonuses are kept, and the base score is adjusted to match. |
fef abilities clearbooks <player> [ability] |
Removes manual and tome bonuses (one ability, or all). |
fef abilities reset <player> |
Back to the class's standard scores; Session Zero opens again so they can re-pick. |
fef exhaustion set <player> <0-6> |
Sets exhaustion. 0 removes it. |
fef reset <player> |
The trader's "Reset race, class & feats", free: race, class, subclass, feats, ability scores, skills and background go back to Session Zero. Level and admin bonuses stay. |
Reactions
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
fef reaction list <player> |
The reactions the character has, and whether each one is on. |
fef reaction on <player> <reaction> |
Switches a reaction on. |
fef reaction off <player> <reaction> |
Switches it off: it won't fire on its own. Same as the switches in the Adventurer's Log. |
Reactions: Shield, Counterspell, OpportunityAttack, HellishRebuke, UncannyDodge, DeflectMissiles, Riposte, Parry.
Races and classes the world offers (1.2.7)
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
fef race list / fef class list |
Which races or classes are on and off in this world. |
fef race disable <race|all> |
Turns a race off (or every race). It disappears from the character sheet. |
fef race enable <race|all> |
Turns it back on. |
fef class disable <class|all> / fef class enable <class|all> |
The same for classes (also hides them from multiclassing). |
A themed world: fef race disable all, then fef race enable Dwarf, fef race enable Human... Characters who already have a race or class that's turned off keep it. fef race set and fef class set still work on any race or class, as a DM override. The same switches are in the config file under [AllowedRaces] and [AllowedClasses].

Settings
Every option in BepInEx/config/jdvanaus.fifthedition.cfg can be read and changed from the console. A setting is written Section.Key, exactly as in the file: FifthEdition.Exhaustion, FEFHud.ReactionAnimations, Hotkeys.CastSpell. The key alone also works when only one section has it.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
fef config list [filter] |
Every setting and its value, or only those containing the filter (fef config list hotkeys, fef config list exhaustion). Server settings are marked (server). |
fef config get <setting> |
The value, the default, the allowed values and the description. |
fef config set <setting> <value> |
Changes it. A server setting (admins only) changes for everyone online and is saved on the server. A per-player setting changes just for you. |
fef config set <setting> <value> <player> |
Admins: changes a per-player setting for that player (or all). |
fef config reset <setting> [player] |
Back to the default. |
Changes are saved to the config file straight away. For hotkeys, write the key name (G, F8, Mouse3, Keypad5); for a combination, join keys with + and no spaces, main key first: M+LeftShift.
Examples
| You want to... | Type |

| Switch exhaustion off on your server | fef config set FifthEdition.Exhaustion false |

| Post the session to Discord | fef session end, then fef recap and paste |
| Rebind cast spell to F | fef config set Hotkeys.CastSpell F (or use Settings > Keyboard & Mouse) |
Older commands
These still work as before: level, feat, class, race, resetcharacter, levelup, fefitem, fefmonster, fefbug, fefexportlang, achievementstatus and selftest. The fef versions do the same jobs, also for other players, with autofill.
Troubleshooting
- "only the host or a server admin can...": you aren't in the server's
adminlist.txt. On your own single-player world you always can. - "sent to the server..." and then nothing: the server doesn't have Fifth Edition Fantasy installed, so it can't pass the command on. Install the mod on the server, or have the player run the command on themselves in single player.
- "no player named ... is online": check the spelling with
fef players. The player needs a character loaded. - Tab does nothing: make sure there's a space after
fefand before the word you're completing.
